The Best of 2008 With One Month to Go

Preparing to sum it all up...

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Can you believe it? There are only 30 days left in 2008! Every year I get together with my family at Thanksgiving and that realization hits you and you ask, "Can you believe it's Thanksgiving already?" The reply typically comes, "Well can you believe we have less than a month until Christmas?" Time just never seems to slow down allowing any of us to take a break and with the awards season in full swing and top ten lists just around the corner I thought I would take a quick look at the year that has been and what is left.

A quick check in the RopeofSilicon movie review archives tells me I have reviewed 118 films so far this year (easily a record for me) and currently have the reviews for Waltz With Bashir, Defiance, The Wrestler, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Wendy and Lucy and Frost/Nixon yet to write and things aren't slowing down as this week has me seeing Punisher: War Zone, Revolutionary Road, Doubt and The Reader. Those ten will take the tally to 128 and things just keep on from there.

I have seen many refer to 2008 as an awful year for film and I have seen it mentioned more than once recently. Has it really been that bad? Is that why my five month old top ten list offering up the Top Ten Best Movies Midway Through 2008 is getting a lot of reads lately?

Considering that fact I decided I better start taking a closer look at what will ultimately become my actual top ten films of 2008. I also thought it would be an appropriate time to help people distinguish between what my personal favorite films are as opposed to the Oscar predictions I have been making. They are not one-in-the-same. As much as I wish the Academy would award the truly best films of the year (by "best" I mean my personal favorite) by adding entertainment value to their barometer we all know that will never happen. I believe this makes personal top ten lists all that much more important.

The ten films I listed as my favorites through the end of June went as follows:

  1. WALL•E
  2. In Bruges
  3. The Edge of Heaven
  4. The Fall
  5. Definitely, Maybe
  6. Kung Fu Panda
  7. The Incredible Hulk
  8. Iron Man
  9. The Bank Job
  10. Rambo

At the time I wrote that list up I said I imagined the top 3 or 4 would hold up and make it onto my year-end top ten, but I am not too sure if that will end up being the case. I went into my review archive and pulled out the twelve films I have given either an A-, A or A+ over the course of the year and this is what those look like in no particular order (please note I never did official reviews for The Fall or The Edge of Heaven).

As you can see four of my earlier top ten films are among that group, but I don't necessarily make my year-end top ten lists based on the grades I have given films. Things change, films don't hold up to second viewings. So many factors go into one's personal opinion of film, which is what makes the discussion so intriguing. Take for instance The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. I gave the film a "B" after seeing it in the theater, but it would be lucky to get a C+ out of my after watching the Blu-ray. While that doesn't necessarily surprise me, and theatrical reviews are often written based on the one-time experience, which I think Prince Caspian manages to live up to quite well, it's the repeat viewings that hurt that flick. The same goes for documentaries in my case. After I have seen a documentary there is very little chance of me watching it again considering they are more informative than entertaining and once you have the information there is little need to go back and get a refresher. On top of that I am just not a guy that seeks out docus, which is weird since I tend to enjoy so many of them.

With that taken into consideration here are my current top ten films in alphabetical order when it comes to making my list of the Best Films of 2008:

  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • The Dark Knight
  • The Edge of Heaven
  • The Fall
  • In Bruges
  • The Incredible Hulk
  • I've Loved You So Long
  • Vicky Cristina Barcelona
  • WALL•E
  • The Wrestler

Obviously there are still plenty of films for me to see as I expect such films as Revolutionary Road, Doubt, Gran Torino, Valkyrie and The Reader to have a chance to slide into that list. I also hope Steve McQueen's Hunger will be screened here in Seattle as I haven't heard a peep about it from my local publicists despite its limited release this Friday for its Oscar run before its wider release in March 2009. Other films that have been absent from the Seattle scene so far include The Class, Che, Last Chance Harvey and Nothing but the Truth.

As for my current list, I can tell you right now of the ten films above there are five locks, which leaves five vulnerable spots. My Special Award will go to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, a film I consider one of the absolute best films I have ever seen, but one I would never want to see again it is so devastating. Every frame of that film appears to have been thought out to the smallest detail and in terms of technical achievement it is a monster. Unfortunately, in my case entertainment value plays a role and there is very little to find entertaining in that feature.

So that's where I stand so far, but more importantly where do you stand? I want to know what your favorite films of 2008 are so far. I am sure your list will be different than mine and may even offer up one or two I may have missed (is that possible?). So share below and let's get a bit of conversation on the subject going. On top of what are your favorites, are there any you are specifically looking forward to seeing?

Uh. Of your Top Ten Movies Midway 2008 list, I'm really looking forward to see In Bruges, Definitely Maybe and above all, The Fall.
Haha, I'll admit that actually I have In Bruges and Definitely Maybe waiting in my shelf. I just don't have the time.
But in the name of international movie piracy, it's so damn haaaaard to find The Fall here where I live (yes, in any format imaginable — even the pirated ones). I've been craving to see it since the beginning of the year… Is it really that great or should I just give up? *sigh*

I'm extremely surprised that you placed "The Incredible Hulk" among your current top ten.

Movies I have given 4 stars to (in no particular order):

– The Dark Knight
– In Bruges
– Redbelt
– Eagle Eye
– Speed Racer
– W.
– Quantum of Solace

This year has been a lot worse than last for movies, but there's still hope for the rest of the year. I get to see Benjamin Button tomorrow, Valkyrie Thursday, and Slumdog Millionaire next Thursday, so after that this list might look different.

@Brad Brevet:

Actually I didn't see it, but I'm just surprised that you placed it in the list, since I've haven't heard anything about that movie in a long time, it's gotten no buzz, so I completely forgot about it.

@Scott: Wow, Speed Racer eh? Now I will say I think that is more surprising than my Hulk bid. Be sure to come back and tell us what you thought of Button.

@Jerzey Jon: Yeah, fanboys dismissed it because they fell in love with Iron Man, but I thought Hulk was far better than Iron Man, especially after seeing it again.

did you really include "rambo" in your best picture list as of June or were my eyes playing tricks on me?

@mdamm: Not Best Picture, top ten favorite films. As in personal favorite. This isn't an Oscar article. Yes, I enjoyed Rambo.

@Brad Brevet: I loved Speed Racer, what can I say. I thought that movie was a complete joy to look at, and I love Emile Hirsch and Matthew Fox. I never understood why everyone gave it such a hard time (everyone I know loved it too, so I guess it's just one of those things).

I totally agree that "The Incredible Hulk" gets shafted just because it came out after "Iron Man" and was pretty much forgotten in the public eye when "Dark Knight" was released- it's a very underrated and ultimately fun superhero movie. Hell, 2008 was a pretty damn good year – three fantastic superhero movies to make up for an overblown, somewhat shitty threequel from 2007.

I agree w/ most of your list, ( I loved "Rambo" & "In Bruges" dearly), and I'd like to add "Redbelt" and "Stop-Loss" if I were to make my own list. And I'm so very looking forward to "Benjamin Button" and "The Wrestler"- cannot wait until they open (and In the case of "The Wrestler", when they open at an indie theater near me).

Loved In Bruges and The Fall…. The Incredible Hulk was extremely well made and surprised me…but strangely I still like the first one better. Has anyone watched Tell No One? Excellent.

Ghost Town
The Dark Knight
The Incredible Hulk
WALL*E
Eagle Eye
Horton Hears a Who!
Iron Man
The Strangers
Get Smart
Madagascar 2

Now you might be thinking: "Really? Get Smart? Madagascar? Those are like.. easy popcorn movies". Well too bad. I liked 'em. I loathed the first Madagascar and was absolutely surprised at how consistently funny and thoroughly entertaining the sequel was. As for "Get Smart"… once again, just entirely true, harmless, silly fun and I love Steve Carell. And "Eagle Eye", while not entirely throughly original, still had very well-crafted intensity and action, and it was just such humongous escapist entertainment. I appreciated it.

Now there's still "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", "Doubt" and "Yes Man" (I'm a huge Jim Carrey fan. Sue me) so "Madagascar 2" and "Get Smart" will probably get pushed out.

That isn't my official list in order of course.. just the line-up of the contenders. I'll put 'em in order when this year wraps up.

I did intentionally put "Ghost Town" over "Dark Knight" though, just so that it will stand out because in a sea of crappy early-fall movies, NO ONE went to go see "Ghost Town". "Ghost Town", in my opinion, was classic entertainment, and it had such a huge, GOOD heart, and genuine humor. But everyone missed out on it. They went to go see utter crap like "Beverly Hills Chihuahua", "Burn After Reading" and "Lakeview Terrace" instead.

It comes to DVD at the end of December. Really guys, it's so, so good. Not the best movie EVER, but definitely one of my new favorites. It's like this year's "Dan in Real Life"… one of those little movies that packs a wallop of genuine humor and heart.

:]

@Ethan Everett:

You know what, I totally forgot about "Ghost Town"- caught it at a second run discount theater here in Irvine, and I loved it. I wasn't actually a fan of "Dan in Real Life", but I think this movie did perfectly what "Dan" attempted to do. And I also am rooting for Ricky Gervais in more lead fare like this movie (even though "Ghost Town" displayed maybe 40% of his actual wit).

@Ethan Everett and Vince: Yeah, Gervais in the lead is phenomenal, but I just don't think the majority of Americans dig his sense of humor. It's a sad thing to say, but it appears to be true. Ghost Town was ignored and really shouldn't have been, it was a great comedy. Oh, and Ethan, I agree with you on Get Smart, I liked that one too.

@Saif Khan: I have Tell No One at home and just haven't watched it yet, but it is about ten inches away from my DVD player so it's only a matter of time.

I've seen Tell No One and loved it up until one of the final scenes where they felt the need to have a character explain the entire plot in one scene. It's like the end of Psycho only 10x worse.

I also saw Benjamin Button tonight, and while I really liked it, it won't be making my top 10. Brad Pitt is amazing (and quite subtle), and the film is very well made, it just didn't strike me in the way it seems to have struck so many others.

Can't wait for Gervais' "This Side of the Truth". I think it comes out in March. Looks very, very promising. He's writing and directing that one too. I'm excited.

I definitely didn't get to the theaters enough this year, I don't have a full top ten – at least not based on everything released. However, my favs for 2008 thus far are (in no particular order):

The Dark Knight
Eagle Eye
Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Wanted
Indiana Jones IV

I am looking forward to checking out The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Revolutionary Road and The Defiance. And, of course, I'll be checking out Wall-E, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Get Smart and Kung Fu Panda on DVD when I have a chance.

@ Brad Brevet: What exactly was show special about The Incredible Hulk? I mean, Marvel financed two big-budget, Summer, Comic Book films in 2008; did you not see Iron Man? How do you pick the big Green vs. Iron Man? I do like the rest of your picks.

Note: I liked Hulk; hope a sequel will be greenlit.
