Summer 2011 Looks Like 2007 as 'Transformers 3' Throws Its Hat In the Ring

Transformers, Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Pirates and maybe Bourne

Michael Bay announced today Transformers 3 will be hitting theaters on July 1, 2011 as was previously reported and then denied by Bay only to now be reconfirmed.

Here's how his announcement reads:

Well its official: We have a great Transformers 3 story. The release date is now July 1st 2011. Not 2012.

Today is Day One. This morning started with an ILM meeting for five hours in San Francisco. Currently I'm flying with writer Ehren Kruger to Rhode Island to talk to Hasbro about new characters.

P.S. Megan Fox, welcome back. I promise no alien robots will harm you in any way during the production of this motion picture. Please consult your Physician when working under my direction because some side effects can occur, such as mild dizziness, intense nausea, suicidal tendencies, depression, minor chest hair growth, random internal hemorrhaging and inability to sleep. As some directors may be hazardous to your health, please consult your Doctor to determine if this is right for you.

Pain and Gain is right after shooting of Trans 3.

Michael

Perhaps the most astonishing part of the announcement is word Transformers 3 will have a story.

The July 2011 puts this film in direct competition with Peter Berg's Battleship for Universal and also another Hasbro property I can only imagine will be seeing itself pegged elsewhere on the Summer 2011 playing board.

Summer 2011 is now looking like a repeat of 2007, a summer that saw the release of Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Transformers and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Doesn't seem a whole lot different from 2011's current slate which includes Spider-Man 4, Transformers 3, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II and the expectation for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Should the proposed fourth Jason Bourne movie also get the greenlight for its rumored 2011 release, that could make five similar releases as The Bourne Ultimatum hit theaters in August 2007.

My our blockbusters sure are showing growth aren't they?

I think you forgot Johnny Depp's "Dark Shadows" movie which is filming next year for a 2011 release. Tim Burton is directing this movie.

We'll be out of this economic recession by 2010 and have possible explosions in job growth by early 2011, just in time for the start of the Presidential race. I think the the whole world will be primed to spend tons of money for movies in general so 2011 looks to be a very profitable year. I could see Spiderman 4, HP 7-2, Transformers 3, and Pirates 4 all making $1 billion gross worldwide. Bring it on!

Yep summer of the sequels has returned, but Brad your still forgetting a few. Were also getting The Hangover 2, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Cars 2. Yes Summer 2011 is going to be pretty intense, because not only are we getting a ton of BIG sequels, but lets not forget that Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern are also suppose to be released so it also looks like a great Summer for comic book fans too.

@James and @wrongturn687: You guys are missing the point. Yeah there are sequels, every summer has those, buy my point wasn't that there are sequels, the point was that they are the exact same franchises as four years ago.

@wrongturn687: Wow, it's definitely a year for blockbusters. It's sad to see so many sequels (maybe Michael Bay is the death of original cinema?), showing us how little imagination studios have as far as creative thought is concerned. But looking at an economic POV, this year we are probably going to crack $10 billion domestic gross in terms of theater revenue, but 2011 looks like it'll crack $11 billion.

There's also Steven Spielbergs Tin Tin, though that might be out by christmas, I'm pretty certain Downey's got Cowboys and Aliens, and I think John Carter of Mars is also set for sometime in 2011. We could possibly have a Star Trek 2 by that time as well.

Brad I didn't mean to make it look like I had a positive outlook on this LOL !. Yes it's sad to see that Hollywood is becoming incredibly lazy with these Summer blockbusters, but honestly what can you do about it ? I was really just pointing out that there are some movies to still look forward to in 2011, but expect many more sequels to come. I'm still hearing that Wanted 2, G.I Joe 2 and even Star Trek 2 could be ready by that time.

@wrongturn687: Yeah, I totally get your point, but wanted to point out exactly what you just said: "Hollywood is becoming incredibly lazy with these Summer blockbusters." What can we do about it? We just hope for the best. :)

Imagine if all of all of the top grossing films of that year surpassed the 300 million mark. It's possible given the track records of the sequels previous installments.

@Colin: Can you imagine if Michael Bay made Batman 3?! He'd have Shia Labeouf playing Robin.

@Colin:

No. Warners Brothers is smart, they'll release Batman 3 in 2012. That way, it'll give the director optimal time to take a break after doing "Inception" and mull story ideas. And they'd be nuts to put Batman 3 in summer 2011, considering the amount of movies packed into three months.

Oh and Brad, Universal moved "Battleship" back a month. It'll open August 5, 2011.
