Storyboards from Martin Scorsese's 'Shutter Island'

Can Martin and a cast of plenty pull this one off?

I was actually just talking to a couple of Seattle critics about Martin Scorsese's October release Shutter Island and telling them NOT to read the Dennis Lehane novel it is based on for fear of ruining the story. I already read the book and have my concerns as to how they are going to pull it off and hope it doesn't ruin the film for me as well.

The film stars a fleet of big names including Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer and Jackie Earle Haley in a story in which Ruffalo will play U.S. Marshal Chuck Aule, who travels with his new partner Teddy (DiCaprio) to the eponymous Massachusetts island in 1954. As they investigate the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane, they encounter a web of lies, a hurricane and a deadly inmate riot that leaves them trapped on the island.

Don't worry, that little synopsis gives nothing away and neither do the storyboards posted by artist Karl Shelfelman on his official site.

Pictured below are 11 boards used for the production. Shelfelman did boards and concept illustrations for such films as American Gangster for Ridley Scott and The Departed for Scorese. You can check out more of his work right here including larger looks at each board featured below.

Holy crap looking at the story boards made me yearn to look at the rest. It almost played as a graphic novel. I could hear a pounding score by Howard Shore as I looked at the storyboards.
