'Star Trek' is Coming to Blu-ray in a Big Way

Boldly going into Blu

Anyone that has read this site for a long time knows I am a pretty big fan of the original "Star Trek" universe. I'm talking Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty and the gang. I have reviewed all six of the last Original Series DVD releases as well as the DVD releases of Star Trek: First Contact, Generations, Insurrection, Nemesis and all four seasons of "Enterprise". Strangely enough I don't consider myself a Trekkie since I love the show, but don't have a very deep knowledge of the universe, and that's an understatement.

My favorite movies from the franchise are Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home and I have no idea when was the last time I saw the original Motion Picture, Search for Spock, The Final Frontier or The Undiscovered Country. However, that will all change come May 12 as Paramount will release all six of the original Star Trek films on Blu-ray in The Original Motion Picture Collection or you can get Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock and Voyage Home on Blu-ray or DVD in The Motion Picture Trilogy.

On top of that on April 28 Paramount and CBS Home Entertainment will release the first season of the original series on Blu-ray in its fully-restored and remastered glory. I have included feature details below along with box art.

All the information and artwork comes courtesy of TrekMovie, which has even more information regarding the releases such as details on how these new releases differ from previous DVD and even HD DVD releases and even a note on Wrath of Khan that reads as such:

Special care has been given to the Blu-ray version of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which has been ‘fully restored’ in a process similar to Paramount’s recent Blu-ray edition of The Godfather. Director Nicholas Meyer tells us that the Wrath of Khan negative "was in terrible shape" which is why it needed extensive restoration. All six films have new 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio.

Get more from TrekMovie right here including hi-res looks at all the artwork previewed below.

I can't wait for these to be released as I have always felt Star Trek was some of the best sci-fi entertainment out there. It's campy and often corny, but for some reason it works — for me that is.

I have nothing against Star Trek and the new movie looks interesting, but I really don't know much about the TV/movie series and I don't know if this is a stupid question, so I was just wondering, why is the Trilogy pack released as parts 2,3 and 4 and not 1,2 and 3?

@Roger: because part 2,3 and 4 form a loose trilogy. they all carry on where the other left off whereas part II took place 5 years after part 1.

I wouldn't call it a loose trilogy, as each film built upon the previous. And the link holding everything together was Harve Bernnett, the genius who reached out to fans all over the world to help him create a unique body of work. I have always been ashamed at being one of those who went off halfcocked when a script set in the time of Kirk's Starfleet Academy days was shot down. No one knew at the time that it was written by Harve Bennett, and now we'll always wonder what could have been. If anyone knows where Harve is now, please share. "It would have been glorius", as evinced by the wonderful experience that is 2009's version of Star Trek. ~Vel
