Soderbergh's 'Che' Gets a Bootleg Trailer Release
Oscar chances seem to have dwindled if not altogether vanished
I still have Jon Lee Anderson's "Che" biography sitting on my coffee table. I have managed to read only 112 pages of the 800+ beast, which is actually an accomplishment for me since reading nonfiction is something of a pet peeve of mine and considering I have finished four other books since starting "Che". However, I am reading "Che" for two reasons. 1) I want to see what all the fuss is about before seeing Steven Soderbergh's film(s) on Che Guevara Che (separately The Argentine and Guerrilla) and 2) I want to know why people are saying, "I will only see it if they don't romanticize the story." This second point was the primary reason since I have seen it so many times and I would be willing to bet at least half of the people making the statement haven't actually learned anything about the man on their own and have only heard stories about him. Basically I like to make up my own mind, not have it made up for me.
Moving forward, a bootleg trailer for The Argentine has hit YouTube and it may be the most you are going to see from this film for some time. Che played as one massive film (4+ hours) at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. Some proclaimed it to be fantastic while others were a bit more harsh. Selling the film to distributors has proven to be a daunting task. Selling it as two films seems to be something no one wants to touch and selling it as an edited three hour movie seems to be out of the question.
So, unless you speak Spanish, the video below will only be useful in giving you an idea of how the film looks because there are no subtitles. Then again, since this is a bootleg it is sort of wrong to even say this is how it looks. Either way, give it a peek and see if you are even interested in this film coming to theaters or if you would want to pass on it either way.
