'Sin City 2' Searches for a New Home?
Will the long gestating sequel ever see the light of day?

Back in early April IESB brought word The Weinstein Company had lost the rights to Sin City 2, the sequel to the 2005 Dimension Films hit based on the Frank Miller graphic novels.
Shortly after the news hit Entertainment Weekly posted a follow-up to the story with a quote from Weinstein Co. lawyer Bert Fields saying, "The Weinstein Co's rights to produce sequels to Sin City remain intact as they always have been. Any suggestion to the contrary is complete hogwash."
I never reported on the story since it seemed like a non-story and, for what it's worth, it still is barely news, but now The Hollywood Reporter gives me incentive to finally talk about it as they are now saying the rights to Sin City 2 "are being shopped around Hollywood, in what appears to be a sign that Dimension Films has lost rights to the property."
The report from Borys Kit and Steven Zeitchik says Weinstein Co./Dimension still hold the rights to the property, but producers say they have been shopped the rights by reps for Miller's estate, who they say are seeking a new place to set up a potential follow-up.
The THR article suggests the Weinstein's option may have lapsed due to inactivity or a decision not to pay to re-up, but considering it has now been four years since the first film brought in over $158 million worldwide on a $40 million budget I would think someone would be chomping at the opportunity to try and duplicate the first film's success.
Talk of Sin City 2 has never really gone away, though, and even recently Moviehole brought back up the long held rumor that Angelina Jolie is still up for the role of Ava Lord saying she is in "serious talks" for the part. I wonder who she was talking to if the report is legit, but it seems fans may still get their return trip to Sin City.
