bradbrevet said: See, I disagree with you about Cruise. I think Scientology is a bunch of garbage, but who am I to say what Cruise believes is wrong? Especially if it isn't hurting anyone? Gibson hurt a lot of people with what he said and it was with comments that you can't really take back.

I agree with you regarding Cruise and Scientology. I definitely have nothing against what he, or anyone for that matter, believes in. I base my dismissal of him more on his remarks towards Brooke Shields and mothers about depression, and then his "overly enthusiastic" antics on the Oprah show. I guess, I'm mainly tired of his "preaching."

Personally I believe them both to be very talented; and it saddens me to be put off from enjoying anything either have and will accomplish because they were both stupid and didn't think before speaking.

I'm sure I can definitely overcome the remarks by Cruise, at some point in the future; however, Gibson doesn't have a shot in hell.

I think Cruise is going to make some ground with his performance in Tropic Thunder just because it sound hilarious and it will distract people from his beliefs. Quite honestly, all he needs to do is hush up about it and he would be fine... that is if he cares about his public image as an actor. However, if he doesn't, then he can go whatever he likes. No sweat off my back.

Kudos to you David Frank for spelling it all out. I highly agree with your article, and that's coming from one of the biggest Mel Gibson fans around (as well as Tom Cruise). I spent my high school years (and more) panting and worshiping the ground that Mel Gibson walked on - hence the origin of my username "melsgirl." Not to mention the loads of Mel and Tom photos pasted to the locker.

However, lately [since what we've all seen and heard] my "love" for Mel and Tom has completely evaporated. I won't deny their talent, when noteworthy - Braveheart, The Passion, Mission Impossibles, etc - but I will maintain that nothing they do from now on will be worthy of my devotion - or quite possibly viewing.

Bottomline... Robert Downey Jr's complete comeback is anxiously anticipated, and thus far been great; Cruise and Gibson should leave the frontlines of the industry.

bradbrevet said:
Personally I think both Gibson and Cruise are fucked... strangely Cruise seems to be fucked more and he didn't even insult an entire nation of people.

Yeah, I agree with you about Cruise. And I think the reason is that all of his dumbass antics are caught on tape for the youtube crowd. My guess is if Gibson's bile was caught on tape and distributed, he would probably remain in the background of Hollywood (producing and etc) for the rest of his career.

Although I do believe Cruise has an out, which would show proof that he's not nuts, and that would be to leave the church of Scientology. I think people would find that to be more than lip service--although it's sort of anticlimatic compared to the Downey rebound. But it'd help repair his image.

And now that I'm thinking about it, I guess Gibson has at least one way to verify he's not all talk. And that'd be to convert to Judaism. I would buy into him as a changed man if he did that. But I got the feeling Gibson would rather be crucified on a cross than do that.

It is so funny you wrote this... When I read that Mel Gibson news I was tempted to do what the rest of the sites did and do a generic write up, but then I decided I was going to take it a step further and do a "Mel Gibson vs. Tom Cruise" feature much in the same style as you did here.

Personally I think both Gibson and Cruise are fucked... strangely Cruise seems to be fucked more and he didn't even insult an entire nation of people. Downey's comeback boils down to what I like to call "stick-to-it-iveness". He worked his ass off to kick his habit and then came back like a bat out of hell and I am so happy he did because he is a supreme talent.
