'Shadow of the Colossus' Game Goes from Being in a Movie to Becoming a Movie

Has anyone ever played this game?

I remember after watching Reign Over Me wondering if the videogame Adam Sandler's character was obsessed with playing was real or not. I believe I went home to search for it, but don't remember anything beyond that… Not like it mattered, really, but the game is real and "Shadow of the Colossus" is no longer going to be a plot point in a movie as much as it is going to be the plot point of a movie as Risky Biz Blog announces Sony has brought in Justin Marks to pen a feature adaptation.

The game centers on the character Wander, who along with his horse Agro travels across a Western-style landscape to defeat enemies known as Collosi, with Wander's larger aim to save the girl Mono. Steve Zeitchik and Borys Kit at Risky Biz describe the game's landscape as minimalist, saying it lacks some of the ensemble characters of other video games; instead, the challenge lies in locating the remote Colossi and uncovering their weaknesses through a series of puzzle-like challenges. Its scenes as well as its soundtrack are regarded by many as highly cinematic.

Any chance this film is good? Marks being on board to write is a bit worrisome if you are interested in the project considering he penned the script for the latest bust Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and other scripts of his including Masters of the Universe based on the He-Man cartoon and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo for McG have not been heard from since their announcement. He does have a script called Hack/Slash in pre-production and he is also said to be writing Suicide Squad based on the DC Comics property as well as scripts for Green Arrow: Supermax and Voltron.

Now, either Marks is going to become one of the most popular screenwriters in fanboy history or he is going to see his scripts rewritten and/or tossed aside. Considering studios continue to return to him there must be something special about him — I guess we will have to see what it is.

NOTE: You can read a pretty cool article on how "Shadow of the Colossus" got into Reign Over Me right here if you are interested.

It's one of the best games I've ever played and I'd always hoped they would turn it into a movie. It will be interesting to see how they do it though as the games ending ties in to another game, Ico and doesn't really make much sense unless you've played it.

I love the game, but I'm not entirely convinced that it would make for a good movie. Basically you have to defeat a host of giant creatures (the Colossi), each of which has it's own particular weak spots, so that you can bring a girl back to life. It's great fun but in transferring to the big screen you're stripped of the joy of working out the puzzles for yourself. That said, I loved the feel of the old Sinbad, etc… movies and the CGI could be amazing.

This game is fantastic! If you're spoiled with PS3 or XBOX graphics, you'll certainly be disappointed with the "look" of this game, since it's on PS2 – but the game play is so amazing, you'll forget all about that.

You need to go out and buy that game! It's probably down to like 10 bucks at Wal-mart.

The game is incredible. The thing is is that no truly talented film maker would ever pick up a video game movie, so they will all continue to be made as cash cows serving a quick fix to young and dumb who don't know the first thing about quality adaptations. There is no such thing as a good video game to movie adaptation because every tiem someone tries they hack the original story to pieces and make it into some bloated piece of crap with cheesy slow mo action sequences and way too much nonsense.

Brad i don't know if you've played the game but it was an epic feet when i played it. I never could have thought a game with the only goal being to kill 16 colossus with nothing in between, NO minions, NO DIALOGUE, only 2 weapons to your arsenal, a horse as the only form of long distance travel and NO SUPPORTING CAST other then a girl that might be dead…

If Watchmen was the unfilmmable comic, this is the unwritable video game adaptation. Brad i suggest if you have sometime and a playstation 2 and are a video game person [some reason i don't think you are] play the game and you'll see exactly what i'm talking about.
