This has been going on for years allready and just about every movie you see that isn't a sequel ends in a way that leaves the door open for one.
It's the same thing as the remaking 70's, 80's and now 90's thing, easy money.

THE real big shame is that it ruins the magic that some movies give you. A bad second or third lowers your opinion of the first one that had you smiling before.
Take Shrek, the second one I could accept but after the third I'm just less inclined to watch the first one again, while I used to love it.

Just like TV shows, how many got you thinking badly of it because it ran to long? The original UK version of the office stayed so brilliant cause it stopped when you wanted more. You never think "the last few seasons were crap".
Thats why I hope Battlestar Galactica and Lost will stay where they are after they end. No more, that's how you create classics that will be remembered and loved for a long time.

Excellent article! It's a shame that sequels very rarely re-kindle the kind of excitement and passion of their originals. No matter your stance on the whole "state" of sequels, I think it's hard to deny the bit of excitement we get when we start to hear talk of our favorite characters returning to the big screen. I'm not specifically talking about Indiana Jones (although it does support my point), but really, knowing that a movie we enjoyed will continue on in the form of a sequel is always kind of intriguing. It's fun to see all of the orginal actors come back and it's especially fun when the new storyline relates directly to the original. In some ways, even if some of the sequels in a series weren't very good, don't we always root for the NEXT one to be good? I'm thinking of series like Rocky...or the Dirty Harry series. Wouldn't it be awesome to see Clint come back as a retired Harry? I think sometimes this childlike excitement sweeps over me and, for a good while, I don't even care if the storyline is any good! The real thrill comes from sitting down in the theater and seeing something new created from old ideas.

This year isn't looking to be that great of a year in terms of movies. I guess I figure that if it takes a bunch of sequels to keep me entertained, so be it! But you're right, if you can't even get all the actors on board, I think you can take a good hint that perhaps the story you're trying to tell is better left on paper.

Man, now that i think of it last year had a bunch of sequals. and they were all shit ( except bourne series and Harry Potter was meh).Come to think of it they come out with prequils too , which always suck. We should have young kids make stories they have more of an imagination then these writers and directors. I mean dont you ever think they would just run out of ideas with these movies. People are gunna get bored with all these sequals.I've started to not care about the Harry Potter movies because its all the same thing every time. Star wars animated just destroyed everything i thought of george lucas. The only movie i had faith for that is a sequal is Dark Knight. I will go see Indy4 but only because Shia Labeouf is in it . Cant wait till next year for a nother shit load of sequals.
