Ryan Reynolds Takes the Lead in 'Green Lantern'

Reynolds nabs another comic lead

Variety brings word the decision has been made and Ryan Reynolds will take the lead role in the Warner Bros. superhero feature Green Lantern based on the DC Comics hero. Just this morning the report was Reynolds was competing with Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake for the part in the film which will be directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye) with production expected to begin in January. Reynolds obviously came out on top.

In the past Reynolds has been rumored as the lead in an adaptation of the comic "The Flash" and just recently played the part of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and is expected to star in a spin-off film of his own with that character as well.

Green Lantern is already set for a June 17, 2011 release and Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. "Green Lantern" began at DC in 1940, telling the story of Hal Jordan, a second-generation test pilot. Jordan is an ordinary man who has been charged with defending a sector of the universe.

Reynolds was most recently seen in The Proposal with Sandra Bullock and will next star in Buried, a dark indie drama that will begin filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds will play a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to coordinate a rescue even though he doesn’t know where he’s buried in the desert.

Meh, I wish they'd just skipped ahead to John Stewart, and had Derek Luke or someone in the role. But I digress. Semi-interested, because I really like Campbell's work when he hits the mark (GoldenEye, The Mask of Zorro, Casino Royale). And I think Reynolds is a decent enough… entertainer. I'll say entertainer, because I'm yet to see real genuine evidence of his acting chops, even after Adventureland.

any movie Ryan Reynolds is in is automatically turned into a comedy so this will be action/comedy. I think it will be more like an Iron Man type now, hopefully as awesome

Wow I'm kinda surprised he took another comic movie, especially with his own spin off with Deadpool coming up. Don't get me wrong, I like Reynolds alot, I just don't get the decision. I was hoping the Ryan Gosling rumors were true, I thought he would have killed it.

Reynolds could be good (I liked him in Smokin' Aces)–he was definitely the best of the 3 mentioned up for the role–but only if the director is up to the challenge. Can he contain Reynold's proclivity for penis jokes? Will GL be creating giant phallic objects while throwing out unfunny, profane one liners? Hope Campbell's bringing his A game.

Reynolds is okay, I guess it could've been worse, much worse. I just hope he takes the character seriously and things don't turn out the way they did the last time somebody co-starring in a Marvel franchise took up the lead role in a DC movie(that would be Halle Berry in my-head-still-hurts-when-I-think-about-it Catwoman).

I'm a little surprised WB didn't pick Cooper. I wonder if they are saving him for The Flash? That would be pretty neat.

I REALLY want Bradley Cooper for Captain America. My first choice was Josh Hartnett but I am liking Cooper for the Captain. What does everyone think of those choices?

Nah, I'd prefer if they picked someone unknown or minor for Cap like the way they did for Thor. Barry Allen or Wally West is the superhero Bradley Cooper should play, IMO.

I'll just wait and see how he does. IMO, he's definitely the best of the three being considered at first look.

that a lil too much of a superhero life for reynolds, i liked him better in smaller movies, he had a real presence in drama movies too, (fireflies in the garden anyone) its pity now hell be type cast, and end up like ben affleck.

@Trevor
I'm not surprised. Reynolds will now have two major franchises to his resume that will only raise his profile as an actor. Gosling would've been better, but if you're going by box-office track record, especially in a bad economy, I might have picked Reynolds as well.

I'm not sure how to feel. Everyone talks about how great Reynolds did in Wolverine (even though it was just a bit part); however, I just don't see it. His role as Deadpool left no impact on me. That having been said, I've always liked Reynolds as an actor. I find him energetic, humorous and a lot of fun.

The question is simple: can he carry a major action film on his wellcrafted shoulders and those killer abs? I'm not convinced. So, until I see a trailer, I have zero expectations for this film. Green Lantern is a B-List hero, let's hope the film can rise to the occasion.

If respect and care is given, even a comic book 2nd tier or B-hero can become blockbuster caliber. Just look at IronMan. I'm ok with Ryan Reynolds cast as GL, I actually think that Bradley Cooper is better suited for the Flash character should they adapt that one to a movie.

So Reynolds is in a movie called Paper Man where he plays the imaginary superhero of Captain Excellent (I say 'imaginary' not because other superheroes are real, but because the character is an imaginary friend to the lead). Paper Man was written and directed by Kieran and Michele Mulroney, the same couple that wrote the script for George Miller's now shelved Justice League movie. On top of that, First Flight get released this month.

Also, I heard an interview with Reynolds where he stated/claimed that Deadpool's appearance in Wolverine would not be canon to the Deadpool movie/franchise (so not a spinoff) and that his approach to the character would differ depending on who directs. He didn't say much else though, citing that he wasn't supposed to talk about it. Unfortunately I don't have a source for this (I thought it was a radio Q interview, but no mention of Deadpool in the podcast) so take this as nothing more than speculation.

@DarkKnightfan12: I know just the hero for Bradley Cooper to play: Hawkman. Because he's got a giant BEAK. He's nothing special, far as being an actor. He's an obvious WB contract actor. They got him cheap. Now, if they can make him a star, they can make some real profit. The order of the day: when you can't find real stars, make some, I guess. Once they've put him in some starring roles (a role where HE is the focal point of the movie), and they bomb, we'll be through with him. Just like Jennifer Aniston and Dane Cook. They'll only allow so many failures before they realize they can't fool all the people all of time.

I don't understand how he can be a character in a DC series and a Marvel series.
Fanboys are gonna have something to say about this…

Poor Choice. It would be best if the studio chose an unknown. The Green Lantern is not a comedic character. I don't think Ryan can pull off the Green Lantern.
