UPDATED: Russell Crowe to Star Opposite Downey as Dr. Watson?
This Sherlock Holmes featuer sure will be interesting

UPDATE: Lies, all lies… The Guardian gives us this:
"I don't have a Watson," [director Guy] Ritchie told reporters. "Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that's news to me. I suspect that hasn't happened and I'm still looking for my Watson."
My experience with Sherlock Holmes, the character, zilch. I haven't read any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories and (to my knowledge) haven't seen any of the films centered on the man. However, now that Guy Ritchie is prepping to bring the famed detective to the big screen I am ready for my introduction. Robert Downey Jr. is already aboard to star as the title character in Sherlock Holmes and now Russell Crowe is
The rumor comes from The Sun, saying the opening in Crowe's schedule caused by the delay of Ridley Scott's Nottingham has allowed the actor to come and star as the detective's famous assistant, Dr. Watson, alongside Downey Jr. A source supposedly tells the, usually wrong, UK rag, "Russell wants the part, Guy wants Russell. All they've got left to do is dot the i's and cross the t's."
Of course, the fact the article quotes Downey Jr. from a five-month-old Premiere article and runs the quotes as their own doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the story's legitimacy.
I am sure if this is true an official announcement will be made soon.
