RUMOR: Will Chris Weitz Direct the Twilight Sequels 'New Moon' and 'Eclipse'?

Will the 'Golden Compass' helmer take over for Hardwicke?

Nikki Finke is hot on top of the Twilight director saga as she is now reporting that Summit has offered Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) helming duties on New Moon and possibly Eclipse as well. Here's the report:

Yes, he's had tremendous success working with tweens and teens (About A Boy as director and writer, American Pie as producer and uncredited director). But Chris Weitz also did The Golden Compass (as writer and director), and my source says Summit Entertainment liked the look of that even if it didn't heat up the domestic box office (but did better overseas). I don't have official confirmation yet that this Twilight sequel offer has gone out to Weitz. But my insider says another reason it came down is because Weitz and Summit's president of production Eric Feig are longtime pals. The source tells me Weitz is "still considering" the offer to helm New Moon and possibly also Eclipse if the sequel and threequel movie adaptations of Stephenie Meyer's series of vampire books are made back-to-back.

Of course, this is 100-percent unconfirmed and I wouldn't even report it had Finke not been the first to break the news Catherine Hardwicke was off the franchise. Stay tuned.

Catherine Hardwicke is the perfect director for this: nothing in the book compares to the moment Bella enters Bio class in the film… Edward — repulsed — winged like an angel (flanked by a stuffed owl), Bella — self-conscious — her hair billows against the fan. The danger of sexuality, the grace of Desire. Beautiful. I was thought Hardwicke could continue in order to work through the ideas she introduces. It was like My So-Called Life with Godfather ambitions. In that tradition, I had hopes Part II would be better. Only one person could have gotten those performances from those actors. This is a real shame. Oh well, here's praying Kathryn Bigelow or Sturla Gunnarsson or Neil Jordan or Patrice Chereau (!!!omg!1) will be hired to take over "New Moon". But something tells me they're not looking for artists (Chris Weitz?????? ugh). Anyone who directs "New Moon" should do screenings of "The Story of Adele H.", "Godfather Part II" & "III", and "The Company of Wolves" for inspiration and instruction.

Anyone up for a fan write-in campaign to voice our concerns to Summit? You never know what can happen. New directors, rushing to make it, how good will the end result be? @Pat:

Seriously, "American Pie" director? Give me a break! In Summit's race to profiit, they seem to have taken a leave of their senses. "The Golden Compass" adaptation was dreadful and I haven't seen anything which leads me to believe that Mr. Weitz has the right sensibility to direct "New Moon". Granted, Catherine Hardwicke's "Twilight" was not perfect and you can bet there are other issues surrounding her not being picked up to direct the next movie. Does that give Summit the right to employ nepotism? If I were Chris Weitz, I would pass. "Twilight" fans have much higher expectations for "New Moon" and he will be villified if he mucks it up. Hell hath no fury like young girl fans who feel wronged…And their mothers are not terribly kind either….

I don't know if he's the best choice, but it's definitely a step up from Hardwicke. Twilight was just a horrible film.

@Pat: I agree someone like Alfonso would be great, I felt Twilight lacked character building.

I don't think Hardwicke was perfect but she was good in that she knew that the next film would take time to be a better production. I read earlier today that Summit wants New moon out by late 2009, not sure that could be a good thing and they want to replace Taylor Lautner, not because of his acting because he isn't going to be tall enough by the time filming should start. AND I also read that this instalment has only been alotted $50 million. WHA!!!!!

SUMMIT!!!! Is screwing the franchise up! WAY TO BE GREEDY!

If there is a whif that New Moon is crap I will boycott this movie and encourage others to do the same.

Write in campaign! Seriously!

Considering the budget they had for Twilight i thought the movie was good, it was what i expected. . . the scene when bella walks into bio class is gay! Rob ruined it by covering his mouth like he was gunna vomit. STUPID! But Catherine Hardwicke is just a bad director, she would just screw up the special effects needed for New Moon. Chris Weitz did and awesome job with The Golden Compass.

okay gonna say i didn't even see the movie but i saw the previews… they got nothing right and the overall feel to the movie that i saw was too serious and airy, i think even though the golden compass was botched, i saw it and read the books, he'd at least be good with certain aspects like werewolves and transitions, twilight was an utter failure to me, i heard the main characters didn't look right, but then again these are my opinions and honestly i don't think new moon could be worse than twilight
