Roy Scheider Passes Away at Age of 75

You remember Chief Martin Brody don't yah?

Roy Scheider

This one doesn't hit me as hard as Heath Ledger's death, but I think anyone of my generation grew up with Jaws being one of your first horror films, so to learn that Roy Scheider, a.k.a. Chief Martin Brody, passed away today in Little Rock, Ark. after suffering from multiple myeloma for several years, and died of complications from a staph infection, his wife, Brenda Seimer, said.

Of course Scheider was in far more films than just the Jaws franchise including being nominated for two Oscars for his performances in All That Jazz and The French Connection and I am sure many sci-fi fans remember him as Captain Nathan Bridger from the television series "SeaQuest DSV".

Born in 1932 in Orange, N.J., Mr. Scheider earned his distinctive broken nose in the New Jersey Diamond Gloves Competition. He studied at Rutgers and at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., where he graduated as a history major with the intention of going to law school. He served three years in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of first lieutenant. When he was discharged, he returned to Franklin and Marshall to star in a production of "Richard III."
