Rourke and Rockwell as 'Iron Man 2' Villains

Both are circling the upcoming superhero sequel

It's safe to say Darren Aronofsky did Mickey Rourke one of the largest professional favors anyone could have done in Hollywood as he, along with Sam Rockwell, are said to be in talks to star as villains in the upcoming Iron Man 2 for director Jon Favreau according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The article goes on to say Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes Whiplash, a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils. Rockwell would play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Anthony Stark, AKA Iron Man, being played by a returning Robert Downey Jr.

If the two join the cast, which is entirely likely considering these stories don't get reported unless they are VERY close, Rourke and Rockwell would be joining, Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, who is replacing Terrence Howard, in the film which is eyeing a spring production start for a May 7, 2010 release.

THR says there still remains the part of Natasha, another one of Stark's assistants, still left to be cast.

Variety said that Rourke would be the Crimson Dynamo…seems like there is a conflict of reports!

That would be cool to see Rouke and Downey in a movie together. Two of this past years biggest comback stories in film getting to play opposite each other, that I would love to see. I've got my fingers crossed.

What exactly is Rourke coming back from? Anyone remember the Once Upon A Time In Mexico – Man on Fire – Sin City – Domino years not too long ago, when Rourke's career was then going through a comeback?
The more interesting thing I take from this is that we'll get to see Downey and Rockwell toss insults back and forth.

What I love about the Iron Man franchise is that they are going for great actors in stead of "hot-right-now" excuses for actors. Sam Rockwell, Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle are three of my favorite actors so this is shaping up to be a great film.
