Rodriguez and McGowan Turn 'Red Sonja'

I guess it is at least better than Barbarella

USA Today is reporting that Robert Rodriguez and his arm candy, Rose McGowan, are set to bring Red Sonja back to the big screen with an anticipated release date some time in 2010. The article makes no mention of what appears to be the dead Barbarella remake McGowan and Rodriguez were trying to get greenlit for what seemed like forever. Probably for the best considering the Jane Fonda original was terrible at best. As for Red Sonja…

The original film was released in 1985 with Brigitte Nielsen in the lead role. USA Today describes the release as "poorly received". A 17% rating at RottenTomatoes reiterates that sentiment in what was considered something of a sequel to Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan films. Based on the red-headed comic book character, Red Sonja will take its cues from the comic books as well as works by pulp novelist Robert E. Howard, father of the original Sonja (then spelled Sonya) and Conan the Barbarian. There is nothing more regarding the story other than to say that both McGowan and Rodriguez have not seen the original and don't plan to with McGowan saying, "Why put that in my head?"

There have continually been rumors tossed around that a new Conan film is also in the works. Last I heard Rob Zombie's name was being batted around as a contender, but I think that rumor died back in February. Come to think of it, Rodriguez was also attached to direct Conan at one point. I think way back in 2006.
