Robert Redford Remembers Paul Newman

A thoughtful look back...

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

If you are interested in Kung Fu Panda 2 (June 3, 2011) getting a release date or the length of Watchmen (2 hours and 43 minutes) don't expect me to do full write-ups, the full story was just revealed inside of two instances of parens.

However, if you are interested in more interesting movie related news, Time Magazine has up a short article written by Robert Redford about his friend Paul Newman titled "An American Icon". It only runs seven paragraphs and is a short enough read you should check it out. Here is a cool little story snipped from the piece that sounds like it encapsulates the fun the two had, but the complete article seems to help sum up Newman as a great man:

Mostly I'll miss the fun we had. We played lots of pranks on each other. I used to race cars, and after he took this rare Porsche I owned for a drive, he began to get into racing. He had incredible reflexes, and he got really good, but he talked so much about it that I got sick of it. So I had a beaten-up Porsche shell delivered to his porch for his 50th birthday. He never said anything, but not long after, I found a crate of molten metal delivered to the living room of my (rented) house. It dented the floor. I then had it turned into a really ugly sculpture and dropped into his garden. To this day, neither one of us has ever mentioned it.

In the short article I wrote telling of Newman's death I had a poll asking what many of you thought was Paul Newman's greatest film, at the top of that list was Redford and Newman's first film together, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and at #3 was their second film together The Sting. What a pair the two made eh?
