COMMENTS

Ten just wasn't enough

With screeners of some of the final films I need to see in order to complete my movie watching of 2008 on their way it looks like by Tuesday of next week I will have seen it all (or enough to determine my top films of 2008), but that's in the future. For now, the next big name to release a list of top flicks is Richard Roeper who has unveiled his top 25 of 2008 in which he also doles out a couple of extra kudos. Here's a recap:

Performance of the year:

  • Kristin Scott Thomas, I've Loved You So Long

Good sequels of the year (Note: Roeper doesn't mention The Dark Knight here but he dedicates his opening four paragraphs to it and made it his #2 best movie of the year)

  • Hellboy II: The Golden Army
  • Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

Just OK sequels this year

  • Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
  • Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa
  • High School Musical 3: Senior Year
  • Transporter 3

Worst sequels of the year

  • The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
  • Step Up 2 the Streets
  • Saw V
  • Rambo
  • Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
  • Star Wars: the Clone Wars

Best villain of the year

  • Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight

Worst villain of the year

  • Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane in Iron Man

  1. I needed a little cheering up after the crippling past two days.

  2. Oh, and I just noticed that Revolutionary Road was left out again.

  3. 3 out of his top 4 are my top 3 favorites so far this year (all except The Wrestler, which I haven't seen yet) so I would say I agree with his list.

  4. @William: Lol, Revolutionary Road is always left out.

Geez, it can't be that bad.

  5. @Jerzey Jon: I'm sure it isn't neither, especially since it's still in contention for the GG's at least.

  6. Yeah, what's with Revolutionary Road being overlooked?!

  7. @William: Well, of course it's not horrible, I'm sure it's better than most of the garbage these days. But I meant "bad" compared to the best movies of the year.

  8. I can't believe he placed "Gran Torino" over "Milk" and "Frost/Nixon".

Gran Torino, to me was an OK film, the high point was def. Eastwood's performance. But other than that "Gran Torino" had many flaws. Besides for Eastwood, the acting wasn't so good, especially the Gang members, they were really bad actors. Well, at least I think so.

And the story takes so long to progresses, I thought a big part of the film contains irrelevant and unimportant scenes that barely moved the story along.

I did how ever like the ending, at least theres that.

  9. they forgot to mention 'Felon' (9/10) as overall i think that's the film to beat of 2008 cause it did not need a big budget to be GREAT unlike 'The Dark Knight' (9/10)

i think those two films are the best of 2008 … cause i think Felon easily beats a good percentage of the ones he listed in his 'best of 2008' stuff

  10. I agree that "Felon" should be no.1 outstanding film with outstanding acting!

  11. i can't believe he has jeff bridges as the worst villain yet has iron man on there. i thought he did an okay job.

  12. 88 minutes, Don't Mess with Zohan, and Harold and Kumar are not bad movies. Not great movies (although Zohan is good), but Disaster Movie? C'mon… Adam Sandler and Al Pacino at least don't torture. Otherwise, this list is fairly predictable.

  13. i'm surprised roeper didn't love synecdoche, ny.
