'Red Sonja' Remake in the Works

Is it necessary?

Variety is reporting that Millennium Films and Emmett/Furla Films are bringing sword-and-sorcery comicbook heroine "Red Sonja" back to the bigscreen.

The story comes amidst Dynamite Entertainment's successful launch of a new Red Sonja comic series last year, a launch that has gone on to be one of the bestselling indie comicbooks on the market.

In 1985 Brigitte Nielson and Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in the live-action feature and opened to horrible box-office numbers ($6,948,633). "The first movie was not a good one — all the more reason to remake it. It is a great character and a great brand," Joe Gatta, head of Millennium Films, told Variety.

On top of film rights, Millennium and Emmett/Furla picked up ancillary rights which is most likely going to lead to a videogame as well. Who knows, it could all work out, or it could bomb just as easily. The best way to ensure it doesn't bomb immediately would be to stear clear of Uwe Boll because this seems like a film ripe for his talent. Oh, burn…
