'Proposal' Takes Friday Box-Office Lead with $12.4 Million

'Hangover' and 'Year One' battle it out for second place

After publishing his predictions, Laremy called me saying people seem to think The Proposal is going to take the weekend seeing how it is the first film aimed at the female audiences since He's Just Not That Into You and Confessions of a Shopaholic back in February. Of course, that's an entirely valid argument, but shouldn't an argument in this case also provide evidence of something worth watching?

Laremy had The Proposal coming in second to The Hangover in anticipation of the R-rated Warner Bros. comedy taking its third weekend in a row, but after The Proposal has now brought in an estimated $12.4 million on Friday I don't think his prognostication will be coming true.

The Proposal is likely to hit $33 million or so with an opening day like that and The Hangover will probably end up around $20-22 million with an estimated Friday take of $8.46 million.

The other big new release this weekend was Columbia's Year One, which has almost been universally panned. It edged out The Hangover by less than a half-million on Friday for the #2 slot at $8.5 million, but I wouldn't be surprised to see The Hangover jump slightly ahead of that one in the end.

Pixar's Up continues to hold strong with $6.1 million on Friday and in its second weekend The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 has taken a dramatic drop after its $23.3 million opening to only earn $3.2 million on Friday.

I have listed the complete Friday estimates directly below and Laremy will be here for a complete weekend recap tomorrow.

  1. The Proposal – $12.4 million
  2. Year One – $8.5 million
  3. The Hangover – $8.46 million
  4. Up – $6.1 million
  5. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 – $3.2 million
  6. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian – $2.1 million
  7. Star Trek – $1.25 million
  8. Land of the Lost – $1.23 million
  9. Imagine That – $0.99 million
  10. Terminator Salvation – $0.84 million

Was Ghosts of Girlfriends Past not aimed at a female audience last month?

@BR: Good point… I overlooked that one when I was scanning the release schedule.

A Year One/Hangover switch wouldn't surprise me in the least either. WOM for Year One is/will be dreadful.

The final weekend rankings will most definitely be as follows:

1.The Proposal
2.The Hangover
3.UP
4.Year One

Up will have even healthier grosses Sat and Sun, and especially with Sun being Fathers Day wherein many families will make it a night out at the movies. The Hangover will stay strong too. As for Year One, the word of mouth from those who watched this yesterday is overwhelmingly poisonous. This movie will drop as the weekend progresses and won't see any increase from that 8mil opening day (similar to Land of the Lost and Love Guru). Proposal will be no.1, Hangover no.2, and UP will muscle it's way into no.3

The Proposal will be no.1, but I didn't expect it to open north of 30mil. The Hangover and UP continue to display exemplary staying power. Year One opened ok, but expect it to lose steam both Sat and Sun because word of mouth is simply atrocious. The Hangover will leapfrog into the #2 spot, and UP will leapfrog into the #3 spot. Year One will find itself #4 once it's all said and done.

I don't know… I saw Year One today, and while everyone knew it wasn't the greatest movie, they all really seemed to enjoy it. And the show was sold out. So I wouldn't be surprised if Year One actually opened 3rd, or even 2nd.

Was sure off on Year One under 10M, but the The Proposal over 30M I might get anyway. Other then prodictable, The Proposal has had ok to good reviews.
