Producers Guild Nominations for Best Production of 2008

Wow, big surprise here...

It's beginning to look a lot like the same-old, same-old as the Producers Guild of America have announced their nominees and named the following five films in contention for its Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award, which in a roundabout kind of way equates to Best Film without actually saying it.

  • Slumdog Millionaire
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • Milk
  • Frost/Nixon
  • The Dark Knight

The winners, determined by voting of the 3,600 members of the PGA, will be announced Jan. 24 at the Hollywood Palladium.

Oh, and the teaser was meant as sarcasm and here are the noms for Animated pic and Best Documentary:

Animated

  • Bolt
  • Kung Fu Panda
  • WALL-E

Documentary

  • Man on Wire
  • Trouble the Water
  • Standard Operating Procedure

I'm very happy with these nominees, and I hope the DGA matches them 5/5, along with the Oscar nominations.

TDK still has a ray of hope, and that is great news indeed.

This year, unfortunately, the movies that are front-runners seem to be determined only by their own buzz. Ben Button has ridden a giant wave of buzz since a month or two before the movie was even released, and mixed reviews didn't even stop the buzz.

Frost/Nixon, which also had mixed reviews, seems to still have strong buzz.

I wish somebody who starts this buzz would take the time to realize that Frost/Nixon isn't one of the 5 best films of the year, nor is Ben Button. Oh well…I guess that's the way Oscar works.

@Scott: That's the thing, Scott. The person starting this buzz may think that 'Benjamin Button' and 'Frost/Nixon' were indeed two of the best films of the year. I've seen the latter show up in the top 5 of many critics' top ten lists, so it isn't that surprising that it's been receiving so much buzz.

Just to let everybody know, the PGA has been one off or spot on with the Oscars.
In 04, spot on
In 05, Munich beat out Walk the Line
In 06, Letters From Iwo Jima beat out Dreamgirls
In 07, Atonement beat out The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

I think that this year, they are spot on, or that Frost/Nixon will get beat out by Doubt

I'm very glad to hear The Dark Knight's chances are raising. I'll be surprised if it isn't nominated at the Oscars. They may even do it just for the sake of getting more viewers.

For the record, I thought Letters From Iwo Jima was better than Dreamgirls.

I honestly dont see Frost/Nixon as an Oscar nominee. There are way too many movies better than it. The Wrestler to name one.

@adu: I don't know. The Oscar jury, in recent years, seems to be heavily influenced by other award ceremonies. Frost/Nixon and Button may not be the best films of 2008 for many people, but the positive buzz give them both a better shot at a nod than say, The Dark Knight. As for The Wrestler, it will be a HUGE surprise if it gets nominated for Best Movie, though I'd prefer it over F/N or Button anyday.

Am I the only one who thinks The Dark Knight is overrated? I watched it the other night and found the dialogue to be extremely cheesy and the plot to have numerous holes. The acting was not even very good (aside from Ledger). Maybe I'm dead wrong but I really hope The Dark Knight misses out at the Oscars. A film like Doubt or The Reader should take the fifth spot in my opinion. I haven't seen Frost/Nixon but Langella looks extremely forced in the trailers which would be a major distraction from the movie for me.

No Matt, you're not the only one, just one of the few (very few) who think like that. I don't blame you, it's just not your type of brandy. Me, on the other hand, can't be happier with the PGA nomination for The Dark Knight, and certainly hope it gets nominated not only for best picture, but for best supporting actor, best director, best adapted screenplay, best cinematography, best score, best special effects, best make up, best sound, best sound editing, best costume.
