And, he would not have fallen for the mistaken belief that the Olivier/Oberon version is the definitive take. Only a version which attempts to tell the entire story should be considered as definitive. Wyler only tells us half the story. Versions which try to tell the tale in 2 hours must also, by definition, fail. It must at least be a mini-series and the closest version to Emily's intent is probably the 1978 BBC production with Hutchinson and Adshead.
