'Paranormal Activity' Takes Out 'Saw VI' at Friday Box-Office…

...and 'Vampire's Assistant' fails miserably

I kept on asking folks if they thought it could happen and if Nikki Finke's Friday estimates hold true it looks like Paranormal Activity will take out Saw VI this weekend, which goes against Laremy's weekend predictions and pretty much everyone else for that matter, but I can't believe any of them will shed a tear for the franchise that seems like it has gone on far too long.

Finke reports Paranormal Activity took in $7.5 million on Friday from its largest theater count yet in 1,945, and is looking to earn $21 million for the weekend. Saw VI on the other hand, is looking to fall well short of its predecessor's $30 million opening weekend as it took in an estimated $7 million on Friday and will be running neck and neck with Paranormal this weekend and will likely hit somewhere around $18 million.

New release Cirque De Freak: The Vampire's Assistant from Universal Pictures is looking dreadful (as it should considering it is awful) earning only $2.3 million on Friday with what Finke presumes will be an estimated $6.8 million for the weekend.

Summit's Astro Boy, which is no better than than The Vampire's Assistant, managed a meager $2 million on Friday looking at a $6+ million weekend.

Finally, newcomer from Fox Searchlight, Amelia is likely to miss the top ten with $1.3 million on Friday for a weekend around $4 million. It could eke its way in to that tenth spot, but negative reviews and bad word-of-mouth is likely to keep it down.

I have added all of Finke's Friday estimates below, stay tuned for Sunday when Laremy will be here for a complete wrap up of the weekend.

  1. Paranormal Activity $7.5 million
  2. Saw VI $7 million
  3. Where the Wild Things $4.4 million
  4. Law Abiding $4.2 million
  5. Couples Retreat $3.7 million
  6. The Vampire's Assistant $2.3 million
  7. The Stepfather $2.1 million
  8. Astro Boy $2 million
  9. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs $1.5 million
  10. Zombieland $1.3 million
  11. Amelia $1.3 million

When you think about it, it's not that surprising. The other Saw sequels opened big because there was no other horror competition. The only ever real competition was Saw IV opening after 30 Days Of Night two years ago. But 30 Days Of Night was never gonna be a big movie so it wasn't that much competition. When A Saw movie finally went against real horror competition, it was gonna crumble.

Also, Saw IV and V were exceptionally worse than the others, so its been losing some viewers. I have a feelings since Saw VI was an improvement it will gain a steady amount at the box office, if not increase.

Cirque Du Freak wasn't as bad as people are saying it is.
Astro Boy is an animated film, what say do adults have in the matter?
Amelia failed.
Paranormal Activity sucked and wasn't scary.
Saw IV was so stupid.

I'm totally rooting for the underdog here, glad that "Activity" is winning the race.

Actually, I just saw the film last night; I enjoyed it, it's remarkable what was done for such a small amount of money. But "one of the scariest movies of all time"? Nuh uh. I jumped once at the end of the film, and that was it. Creepy and effective? Yes. Scary as hell? No.

Regardless, good to see that someone toppled the beast that is the "Saw" franchise.

I can't believe of all films, Amelia is this week's critical failure (outside Saw VI, of course). I guess Oscar buzz isn't functioning like it used to.

I nailed it! This is one of those I told you so moments. I totally hit Astro Boy and Saw VI, wrong on Cirque de Freak though…

GREAT NEWS! Saw 6 is an absolutely dreadful film. Someone just decided to come up with the dumbest idea for a film, hire some of the worst actors of the decade, and just see what happens. That was the formula used for analyzing Saw 6.
Paranormal Activity was filmed by some college students w/ an above average camera, and it was quality filmmaking. kudos to them.

Paranormal activity is boring. If I want to sleep, I'd fall asleep.
Adults have a say in the matter when 1) If they watched the original, they wanted to see a CGI version that was anything but this movie (yes I saw it) in their elder years 2) If they watched the 80's version at all they were expecting a great movie and 3) If they didn't see the 2003 version, then all they get is that this is too low for even most kids to enjoy.
Whatever dumb person who decided to release Vampires Assistant now and not in January when it would have no competition is really, really stupid, bad movie or not.

As far as Saw VI goes, I don't think the studio will be too upset when this movie hits 50 million worldwide considering it probably didn't cost over 20, the DVD sales, and the fact that the budget can be cut down (as I've mentioned before) for sequels to the point where 30 million worldwide would be profitable. Saw 8 (hard to keep track of roman numerals sometimes) may be the last, but low numbers or not, there will be more Saw movies, and contrary to popular belief, they will be better than 98% of most movies that come out in the next two years, and it'll still be good…

Up above, when speaking of versions and who has a say, I meant "Astro Boy."

It was my daughter's birthday today. She wanted to see Astroboy. That was vetoed and we caught Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs since we hadn't gone to that one yet, and I am very glad I did – it was a good show, not the crap that I'm expecting Astroboy to be…

@Seiko: Just clarifying something up for myself… you are saying that Saw films will be better 98% of ALL the movies coming out over the next two years correct?

@BR:

Yes, even if they make them 1/2 as good as 5, it'll still beat out, dare I say it, probably all original horror movies (sad to say but even an ok pointless remake seems better than anything original save Drag Me To Hell) and all remakes possible with the exception of the potentially good Nightmare On Elm Street.
Otherwise, all I see being better in the coming years are Iron Man2, Thor, Captain America (maybe), Legion, Machete, or Narnia3, Resident Evil 4, or Sucker Punch. That's about it, all I can put out of every saved page for any movie that looks remotely good for the next two years.
The point here was because Saw 7 and Saw 8 will be out during these years.

@Seiko:
When I say "horror," I do not include horror action like the Resident Evil movies, and I do not know if another Sarah Michelle Gellar horror movie may be out either (had to throw that in there; she's amazing). And it's only for movie with dates, not "supposed" 2010 or 2011 releases like George Romero's Survival of The Dead.

Probably pointless to say now and discredits my opinion (for some reason), but Transformers 3 will also be better and downright awesome.
