Pair of Clips from Jane Campion's 'Bright Star'

Will it win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival?

As I mentioned in my first Oscar update of 2009, Jane Campion's Bright Star had a solid debut at the Cannes Film Festival and now I have the opportunity to bring you some video from the flick as two clips have surfaced online.

Featured in the second clip of the two is the much talked about Abbie Cornish who plays Fanny Brawne, the unlikely romantic partner of a 23-year-old John Keats (Ben Whishaw) as the film tells the true story of their passionate but ill-fated love affair. Joan Dupont at The New York Times praised Cornish's performance calling her the "bright star" in a film that left "few dry eyes" in the house.

The film also has a small chance at taking home the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year even though odds on favorite are Jacques Audiard's A Prophet, which recently got picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.

Bright Star will be released by Pathe in France on July 22 and in the U.K. by Warner Bros., with whom Pathe inked a strategic distribution deal in March. As for U.S. distribution, it will be handled by by Bob Berney and William Pohlad's new, still unnamed company.

After you check out the two clips you may want to browse our gallery of 22 images right here.

Costume drama is not one of my favorite genres. A film must have alot more going for it than cute costumes and charming antique habits and mores to catch my interest. However, I am eager to see Jane Campion's work on this film. The visuals, the use of light and color and the subtle movement of fabric, that are being shown of this production look stunning. And she has kept the story small, almost insular. I do so love the simple intimacy that films like this provide.

From what I've read Campion has taken the story of Keat's tragically short life and given us a view of the chaste love affair he had with his neighbor, Fanny Brawne, in the last few years of his life when his writing was most prolific. The clips show a level of performance that is very good, possibly award winning. I must add that I am a fan of Abbie Cornish and look forward to seeing her portrayal of Fanny very much.

Really looking forward to Campion's Bright Star when it hits theaters this fall. It's great to see her back in the director's chair, and the visuals of the film look stunning. If you haven't seen trailer for the movie, you can find it here: http://www.brightstar-movie.com
