Oscar Update: 'Reader' Release Date and Hoffman's Pitch

Kate doubles her options and Dustin now has one...

Kate Winslet

Well, the worry that the Weinstein Co. may end up pushing The Reader into 2009 is no more as the following joint statement was released by Harvey Weinstein and producer Scott Rudin:

We are issuing this statement together to emphasize the fact that we are in complete agreement on the date we have chosen to release “The Reader.” Working together, we developed a plan to extend the post-production schedule in order to give Stephen Daldry the additional time he needs to successfully complete the film in time to release it on December 12, 2008.

This means Kate Winslet will now be competing against herself, at least as of right now. Winslet stars in The Reader as well as Revolutionary Road and both are expected to earn the actress some attention, which was one of the reasons the release date was in question. Strangely enough
Winslet replaced the originally cast Nicole Kidman in the role after Kidman got pregnant. Why is this strange? Because was the first choice for the role but was unable to do the movie because of a scheduling conflict with Revolutionary Road. It seems these two films were destined to be linked.

This weekend we also learned Dustin Hoffman's name has been thrown into the Oscar ring as Overture moved Last Chance Harvey from its 2009 release date and into 2008 with the film set to hit the bigscreen on December 26. Of course, Hoffman isn't the only one benefitting from the move as previous Oscar winner Emma Thompson also has a role in the romantic drama and she is certainly not one to be overlooked.

I wouldn't expect Young Victoria this year. It doesn't have a distributor yet and will probably need to be seen at some film fests next year to get one.
