Oscar Update: Australia, Frost/Nixon, Hurt Locker, Milk and More

Another recap from the past couple of days...

After launching the RopeofSilicon “The Contenders” section I have been hording links to new information and buzz for the multitude of films listed and have today updated the Documentary Page with a link to my Man on Wire review as well as updated the pages for Frost/Nixon, WALL•E and Australia.

A new review of Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker gives me an idea it may need to be added to the list soon. And, if you haven’t done so yet, check out the trailer for Milk at the bottom of this article.

A couple of items not yet updated on “The Contenders” page include Derek Elley’s review of The Burning Plain at Variety that isn’t as flattering as those preceding it and if you haven’t checked it out yet the LA Times has feature on the films screening at the Toronto International Film Festival which begins today.

The last bit I will include here, since the reviews are all relatively new and I haven’t had a chance to read them all yet, are all the positive reactions to Rachel Getting Married starring Anne Hathaway. Reviews from Variety, Hollywood Reporter, the Times and Screen International all love the film and thanks to In Contention for the round-up.

You can take AUSTRALIA out of the consideration section right now. I was one of the selected few at the test screening in Minneapolis. Granted they are probably going to make cuts to the 2hr57min (sans credits) film, but I don’t think editing can save this overly dramatic film that is trying too hard to be the next TITANIC. People were laughing in the audience at how bad this was. And people were booing when the film refused to end. No wonder they went back a few weeks ago for reshoots. But it won’t help. Maybe it can be a solid **1/2 star movie at best, but that’s it. It might get a few technical nominations, but not any of the major ones. Expect lots of bad reviews when this comes out. It’s going to be a gigantic flop for FOX.
