Oscar Update: New Predictions after Seeing 'Up In the Air' and 'A Single Man'

Plenty of movement, plenty to discuss

It feels good to know it will only be a matter of weeks before I will have seen all the major Oscar contenders as my prediction charts are starting to be less about buzz and the opinion of others and I can finally add my own personal opinion into each. Of course, I still have films such as Invictus, Nine and Avatar yet to see, but by the end of day on December 10 that will no longer be the case for those three.

I will also have seen Brothers, Broken Embraces and The Princess and the Frog by that time as well.

Unfortunately, Crazy Heart and The Last Station are ducking me as I haven't heard a word about either film here in Seattle, but hope to soon.

As for what I have seen, I finally saw Up In the Air just last night as well as The Young Victoria, Me and Orson Welles and A Single Man recently. All four had an effect on me and all four are worth seeing. But let's dig into the Oscar prospects.

In the Best Picture category there weren't any major changes as Precious remains my front-runner, but at the bottom of the stack A Single Man moved into the top ten while the Coen brothers' A Serious Man was edged out. My top ten still contains unseen films such as Invictus and Nine, while Crazy Heart makes its debut at #13.

Best Actor saw movement at the top as I have given in to early buzz for the time being on Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart and moved him to the top of the class. This is more in response to seeing George Clooney in Up In the Air than to anything else. Clooney is just fine in Up In the Air, but it's still just Clooney playing Clooney and he already won an Oscar for that in 2006 for Syriana. Colin Firth becomes an increasing contender for that top spot in my mind and based on the films I have actually seen, he is my front-runner for A Single Man. This movement ultimately bumps Jeremy Renner out of the top five, but I never really thought he would remain in there until the end.

The Best Actress category didn't see much movement other than Helen Mirren moving into the fourth slot for The Last Station edging Saorise Ronan out of the top five. Of course, this is just buzz movement at this time as I still haven't seen either The Last Station or The Lovely Bones so things could change very quickly. Emily Blunt also makes her debut in the category for The Young Victoria at the #8 slot.

I wish Supporting Actor saw even more movement than it did as I have debuted Christian McKay's performance in Me and Orson Welles at the #6 slot, but I'm afraid Oscar pundits around the web are keeping mum on one of the finest supporting performances of 2009. And one of the best performances overall. For now Stanely Tucci remains my gut instinct front-runner for The Lovely Bones, but Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) and Alfred Molina (An Education) should not be second guessed.

Finally, for Supporting Actress we again see some movement near the top and a newcomer in the top five. Anna Kendrick is that newcomer and she edges out her Up In the Air co-star Vera Farmiga, but it's an interchangeable battle at this moment as Farmiga is solid throughout that film, but Kendrick has the much meater character. If it wasn't for a terrible crying scene I would be 100% behind Kendrick's nomination, but Cotillard or Cruz could swoop in with their Nine performances and leave both Farmiga and Kendrick on the outside looking in.

The biggest move in the Supporting Actress category is Julianne Moore for a fantastic performance in A Single Man as she pulls out an English accent with professional ease playing a 48-year-old desperate divorcée.

On a side note, if you are interested in discussing this year's Best Cinematography enter the conversation right over here. And finally, next Tuesday, December 1 will feature the 25th Film Independent Spirit Award Nominations Press Conference at 8:00am PST at the Sofitel hotel in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for that.

For a complete look at my prediction charts I have included the links to each category directly below. On top of that, The Envelope at the Los Angeles Times has finally presented the first batch of aggregate predictions of which I am a part of. Their Buzzmeter appears to be having some issues, but there is a post right here that contains the most recent predictions as well as a list of the 19 other pundits contributing to the prediction charts.

If anyone gets snuffed out of the supporting actor race I think it will end up being Damon. From what I'm hearing and reading he really doesn't get as much do with the part as other roles he's had and it is more Madella's story. Hopefully Plummer or Mckay could sneak there way in.

I was just reading on another site about Nine, and apparently there is a slight bit of doubt about Day-Lewis if you can believe it. Not to the quality of his performance, but more of the choices he makes with his part are not what one would expect for his character. While I love D-Day as much as anyone else, it's also good to see some new-blood once in a while and Renner seems worthy of it to me.

Speaking of Hurt Locker, I don't believe the academy has given the best directors prize to a woman, and Bigelow seems like a lock for the nomination for tackling what isn't exactly the easiest subject. Prehaps history could be made.

Good to hear your updates. I'm a little surprised with your comments about Kendrick's crying scene as I hadn't read about that previously. I do agree that it is quite annoying to have to keep doing predictions without having seen a lot of the films.

George Clooney didn't just play himself in Syriana. Far from it! And he would certainly not have won an oscar if that was the case.
And I also disagree with you when you state that he is just playing himself in Up in the air. Yes, his character in the film has similarities with his life, as far as we can assume but his performance in it was a lot of more than "just him playing himself". And he was definitely great in it.
But I agree with you about Anna kendrick's crying scene. She was great in the film but not there.

@billyb: Don't get me wrong, I like George Clooney and what he brings to a film, but I don't necessarily see a different person each time around. I either see serious Clooney or madcap Clooney. I like it, but it just doesn't move my dial in terms of Oscar consideration.

This is what a dread every year. People second guessing. Who will win? Even before seeing the movie? Depending mainly on past glories. How serious can this silliness get? The only positive thing stemming for all this wordplay is that unknowns get noticed. But you´re talking top-5 only. Why not blasting about promising unknowns all over creation? That would be something worthwhile. A website like this should find newcomers. Along with patting on older shoulders. It´s about finding new life, new talent. Expanding the universe.

You're bumping Renner? Really? With enough buzz, he'll likely be nominated, and may even win.

Win for Renner? I barely think he deserves a nomination…

@Brad Brevet:

I agree with your assessment of Clooney, I think he is good at what he does, but I don't see much range. Same with Amy Adams, although I did see a glimmer of range in Sunshine Cleaning.

Well, tons of people totally disagree with your statement about George Clooney. Or else, you can tell the same thing about almost all stars who they are so famous that it is difficult not to see them before their character. I wonder if he is not that great as an actor as you believe why so many directors, actors, producters want to work with him and praise him every time they can ?!? I wonder why he has already won one Oscar, was nominated for another and how everyone can believe that he will have another one this year…
Sorry but he is not either "serious Clooney" or "madcap Clooney" on all his films. Check ER, Solaris, Up in the air, Syriana, Out of sight, Michael Clayton, three kings, O brother where are though?, The men who stare at goats amongst others films and you would see different person every time. Because those character have nothing in common except the fact the same man played them. And I wonder how much deranged you believe he is if you wonder he is himself when he plays a depressive psychiatrist, a suave gangster, a deserted spy, a pediatrician who grew up along the five years and more we saw him and so on…

billyb I can't speak for Brad, my issue with him is that he play's his characters the same way mannerisms etc. That doesn't mean he's a horrible actor or he isn't great. He just isn't very versatile. The same with Denzel Washington ( who has won two Oscars btw). He plays his characters for the most part the same way.

What about Maggie Gyllenhaal? And don't you think it's time for both 'Up in the Air' actresses to be in your top 5?

Three of the top five actors you have not seen? Does that mean weak field maybe?
