I think the nominiees for best visual effects and sound should be star trek, avatar, 2012, and transformers: revenge of the fallen, but transformers 2 should win because it has amazing special effets; how they transform is a revolution in viaual effect technology. Also transfomers 2 should also get the oscar for best song from linkin park's song ''New Divide''.

Public Enemies could make some noise in that category, also, Away We Go, in my opinion was very good. Cheri also comes to mind.

Avatar has that visual effects oscar pretty much in the bag. I don't think they will "make it up" and hand it to Revenge of the Fallen after it's predecessor lost to golden compass.

I loved Star Trek and it is one of the best films of 2009 as we approach the half-way mark, but regarding it as a BP contender is just not fair to the real Oscar contenders and is one of the many reasons why 10 nominees was a bad idea. If Star Trek can be nominated, who's going to stop The Hangover from a nod? Or even Harry Potter, if it's as good as early reviews have said? The fact that this is all about the money- the extra box office numbers or DVD sales a film gets with a Best Picture nod- just puts the award to shame and gives what used to be the thrill of a nomination nothing more than a 'Congrats, here's a Fig Newton'. And least that's how I see it. The only good thing out of this that Pixar is finally going to get the recognition it deserves since Up is more than likely to get a nod.

I also think the Academy has massive short-term memory loss and a film released before fall has to be pretty damn good if it wants any chance at a big award. That's why I'm hesitant about Hurt Locker's or Public Enemies' opportunities and I don't even think Moon is a contender.
