Godfather over Sex this week and perhaps a trip to L.A. Confidential

The Godfather Trilogy: The Coppola Restoration
Was there ever a question what I was going to lead with this week? Paramount’s restoration of the Godfather trilogy is a godsend and I already brought you the trailer, a 2001 vs. 2008 comparison as well as my review. However, I forgot to mention in the review that Steven Spielberg was actually the one that approached Paramount’s Brad Grey on behalf of Francis Ford Coppola asking to begin the restoration on his “first” day when DreamWorks and Paramount teamed up. Strange the restored version would come out only a few days after Paramount and DreamWorks split.
L.A. Confidential
L.A. Confidential may not be a classic in the same sense as the Godfather, but that doesn’t make it any less of a great movie. Offered in a new two-disc DVD edition and on Blu-ray this is a film many film buffs, crime film buffs especially, should own. It stars Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, Guy Pearce, Danny DeVito, James Cromwell, David Strathairn, Simon Baker and Ron Rifkin and took home two Oscars, two Golden Globes and a SAG Award. Basinger went away as the big winner, but Pearce and Crowe are also fantastic in this flick.

Boston Legal - The Complete Fourth Season
Fox has been a bit erratic in their ability to send out screeners so I am not sure if I will be getting this one any time soon. They used to send out a bunch of crappy copies of their films, but lately they have sent out some screeners post release. Hopefully that’s what they do here since “Boston Legal” is a show I really do like and am anxious to see how John Laroquette panned out as a regular addition to the show.

Deception
The year isn’t over yet, but Deception is certainly a candidate for earning a spot on a top ten worst films of 2008 list. This Fox title I was actually offered a review copy of, but declined considering I would rather pull my fingernails off than watch this film again (yes, that’s an exaggeration).

Leatherheads
This is a bad film, no matter what Sara said in her review, it’s bad, bad, bad… Read her review right here and then forget it all and then remember this film is bad.

Domenic does a decent job of describing how bad this movie is, but he may even be a little kind.

Run Fatboy Run
I just passed this film off to Sara for review in hopes of clearing up my plate a little bit. Of the bunch that I gave her this was the one I didn’t really want to give up. I love Simon Pegg and while Run Fatboy Run was basically ignored upon release and got a majority of negative reviews I am still interested in seeing it. Perhaps I will some day.

Sex and the City: The Movie
I am baffled and damn near enraged that Sex and the City is the top selling DVD this week, beating out the Godfather trilogy, which tells me movies as quality entertainment rather than dumb entertainment has become almost lost on society. However, it is interesting to see how Godfather on Blu-ray is beating out the DVD counterparts, but this is a time to talk Sex and the City, a movie that wasn’t awful, but it was epic. At just over 2 hours and 30 minutes and the promise of even more minutes on the DVD version is hardly enticing, at least to me. Fans of the show should be excited, but I can’t see folks outside of that circle sharing an equal amount of enthusiasm.
