'Hancock' stumbles online and Criterion debuts three new titles

Hancock
I posted my review of the Blu-ray edition of Hancock right here and it isn't exactly a favorable one. This movie, while having a great concept, just doesn't work and it all has to do with the script as it was presented on screen. I didn't read Vincent Ngo's original script though, and considering what David had to say about it when he asked whether it was too soon to remake Hancock it sounds like there is a potentially great story left on the table in an effort to release a toned down film. I know they are working on a sequel to the film and I have no idea what direction they plan on going, but a satisfying sequel could make this original more tolerable. However, right now, this film isn't worth your time.

Criterion Releases
Bottle Rocket / Spy Who Came in from the Cold / Chungking Express
I have only seen Bottle Rocket when it comes to this week's Criterion releases and should you be interested in any of this week's titles and are more of a Blu-ray fan you may want to hold off until December 16 when all three of these will be available in high-definition. However, no matter what version you want I strongly recommend you check out Bottle Rocket, it is Wes Anderson's first film and I did a big write up on it back in June (read that here) after seeing it for the first time. It is truly a hilarious film. The 2-disc set comes with an audio commentary with Anderson and Owen Wilson, the original thirteen-minute black-and-white short that inspired the film, deleted scenes and a few other goodies. As for the other films this week, I have no idea, but they both sound great with Martin Ritt's adaptation of John Le Carré’s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Wong Kar-wai's Chungking Express.

24: Redemption
David is going to be reviewing this one soon so I won't weigh in with an opinion of my own but James Hibberd over at THR's Live Feed tells us this based on the show's television debut, which earned solid ratings (12 million viewers) after 18 months of being off the air:

EW gave the movie a B- and so did Newsday. Boston Globe called it "flat." USA Today says it "represents a reconnection with the real world, where actions have consequences, and the general populace notices when disaster strikes." Indeed, the movie has less of the loopy, anything-goes narrative roller coaster of last season. Characters don't seem like they're about to switch allegiances at the drop of a writer's pen.

Fred Claus
I was most inconsiderate and passed this one off to Sara to review and based on her lively commentary I will have to assume she didn't like it. Here's a snippet:

Easily one of the worst holiday pictures ever made (easily up there with Santa Claus: The Movie and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, but still not quite as heinous Deck the Halls), I can't imagine anyone thinking purchasing this film on DVD or Blu-ray would be even close to an outstanding idea.

Meet Dave
It's so funny when I take a look at the upcoming releases each week and a film pops up that I honestly forgot even existed. I can't help but wonder if 20th Century Fox and Eddie Murphy both feel the same way about Meet Dave.

Universal Blu-ray
Jarhead / The Kingdom
Universal sent me both of these and they are both replacing their HD DVD counterparts, and I truly love them both and also believe if you are a Blu-ray fanatic and like either of these movies to the point you would consider buying them on Blu-ray is the way to go. Outside of the fact that both films are great Jarhead looks phenomenal in high-definition with cinematography by Roger Deakins that manages to make fiery oil fields look beautiful (if that is even imaginable). As for The Kingdom, there is a kick-ass special feature in the U-Control BD exclusive that allows you to watch the final apartment siege from four different perspectives. I have no idea if this was considered while Peter Berg was filming it, but I sure hope it is considered in the future when such a scenario presents itself because it is a lot of fun to watch.

Beverly Hills, 90210 – The Complete Sixth Season
It was a toss-up to include this in the "Even More" section or at the tail end of the featured section and since the script I wrote to create this article already had it lined up for me I felt it wouldn't hurt to add one more picture at the end of this article. So here it is… BH 90210 continues on DVD… Yay!
