'WALL-E' and 'Tropic Thunder'... a pair of must buys!

One quick note regarding Criterion Collection's initial wave of Blu-ray releases. The company has delayed their first wave by nearly a month as Bottle Rocket, Chungking Express, The Third Man, and The Man Who Fell to Earth will now release on December 16 and The Last Emperor has now been set for January 6. However, there is some good news on the Criterion front… They have a sale going on right now giving you 40% off of everything on their site. Click here to take advantage. Now to today's DVDs and Blu-ray releases.

WALL-E
I just reviewed the Blu-ray version of this and I have to say, it is a very long review. So let me give you the short version: BUY IT… On Blu-ray if you were wondering. Clicking the Buy Now button will give you a look at all the buying options over at Amazon.

Tropic Thunder
I also just reviewed this title and did an equally extensive piece, however this one came with plenty of visual aids. Like WALL-E, I won't waste a lot of your time and just tell you to buy the Director's Cut if you were trying to decide and buy it on Blu-ray if you have a choice. This is a great looking film, on top of being hilarious, and looks fantastic in high-definition.

Star Trek – The Complete Third Season (Remastered)
I haven't yet gotten around to reviewing this one, but I did manage to rewatch all the episodes in this remastered set and while the third season isn't the best season of the original "Star Trek" series it has some great gems. Strangely enough, I think my favorite of the bunch is "Spectre of the Gun", a truly campy episode where an alien race duplicates the setting of Tombstone, Arizona pitting the Enterprise crew as the Clanton gang up against the Earps. It's a truly silly episode, but I enjoy it. It's right up there with "A Piece of the Action" from season two, where the Enterprise crew comes across an alien race contaminated by an earlier visit from an Earth crew and have created a society based on the Chicago mob. Highly campy, but a lot of fun.

Season three also has remastered versions of "The Tholian Web," "The World is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky," "The Lights of Zetar" and "The Cloud Minders" to name a few. These are a fantastic buy, but will only be truly perfect once released on Blu-ray. It'll happen, but when?

300 (Limited Collector's Edition)
I actually just watched a little bit of 300 again for the first time in over a year. I didn't end up finishing it since it was my late night capper and I always fall asleep watching that one, but I left it out planning on finishing it up. This flick is wildly over-the-top, but always a fun watch. I'm not sure if it is worth a limited edition DVD purchase though, that decision is up to you.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2
We will have an official Blu-ray review of this one coming very soon as I had to hand it off considering I didn't see the first flick and have no desire to see this one. I guess I am the wrong gender and about 15 years too old to find enjoyment in it.

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
I enjoyed this documentary very, very much but I don't see any reason for anyone to buy it. Then again, I don't understand why anyone would buy any documentary considering they are good for one watch and that's about it. How many times do you need to hear the story of Hunter Thompson? Once was enough for me, but I will say this is worth a rental.

Heathers (Limited Edition Locker Set)
I do not like this film and I will never understand the infatuation. However, I know it has its fans. Why else would they release a version of the DVD that comes in a freaking locker? The Buy Now link below also brings up the option to buy Heathers on Blu-ray too.
