NSFW: Bale Goes Ballistic On 'Terminator Salvation' Set

Wow, this I did not expect

Christian Bale and Sam Worthington in Terminator Salvation
Photo: Warner Bros.

Apparently I was sleeping when news of a Christian Bale rant on the set of Terminator Salvation was reported, but the incident was audio taped and TMZ has made it available for a listen in a 3:49 profanity laced mp3.

From the sound of it director of photography Shane Hurlbut walked on set during the filming of a scene to "check the lights" and Bale didn't appreciate it none to much. Mid-way through you hear him refer to director McG who worked with Hurlbut on We Are Marshall and says he didn't see the incident Bale is referring to.

Bale threatens to kick Hurlbut's ass and if it happens again threatens to not return until he is fired. It is quite shocking and definitely not safe for work due to language.

You can give it a listen below.

Terminator Salvation hits theaters May 22. For more on the film click here.

I don't know, I'd be pretty agitated too if the director of photography walked in front of his own camera. I mean I could definitely see how he could think that is very amateur.

yeah…its tough language and goes too far. But im an actor too and if someone doesnt yell cutt…and you walk in the middle of the scene that´s really F..ked up. And it doesnt matter who you are. Doing a scene can really keep you on the edge all the time. If someone has checked how that guy from the seinfeld show goes grazy on a standup set…it´s pretty much the same thing…except when your doing standup you should be prepared that the audience might interrupt you.

i´ve never went that crazy on the set and i dont think i´ll ever will cause it´s a bit rude :) but im just saying that i understand Christian.

When the DP knew Bale was unpredictable, why the heck did he go about messing with him? And for the second time at that!

I would blame the DP for fueling the fire. What kind of a cinematographer walks into a scene to check the lights, he should make things ready before the camera starts rolling ainnit?

Reminds me of that scene in 'In Bruges' where Ralph Feinnes blames that guy who gets shot in the eye with blanks, telling him that it was his own fault.

Well, that sounds exactly how I'd react if I were a professional actor and someone walked onto the set and purposely did something out of the norm while cameras were rolling.

I smell bullshit in this whole thing, and Bale is in his rights.

I'm not saying the way he acted was correct but understand. As a student filmmaker I understand how frustrating it is to prepare a shot and get your actors ready to shoot, only to have someone look into the camera and give a peace sign and I'm working with camcorders and $5 budgets for a film that will only be shown to my class. I can't imagine how hard it has to be for an actor working on a $200 million film, where not only do you have to make that money back (Which would mean $400 million just ti break even by the way.) but make up for the mess that was T3 and some guy pulls a stupid move like that. I can't imagine anyone not being on the verge of insanity and is too easy to criticize Bale as a douchebag because of it.
Yes the way he treated him was immature, stupid and flat out disrespectful but the reality of the manner is no one can claim the stress would get to them.

I love hearing stuff completely out of context and jumping to conclusions about who may or may not be an asshole.

For all we know, this DP had been disrupting shit left and right and it got to the point where Bale finally just lost it. When you consider that an actor's job is ALL ABOUT CONCENTRATION — especially in an intense scene with intense subject matter — it could be pretty friggin' annoying for somebody to disrupt that concentration, especially if it wasn't for the first time.

And, of course, we have absolutely no idea if Bale went to this guy later on and said, "Jeez, mate, I'm sorry. I really lost my sh*t."

Is Bale's reaction acceptable behavior? As I said, hard to say when it's completely out of context, and we have no idea if the reported reason for the blow up is true. I'd generally say, no, it isn't, but then I wasn't there and have no idea what really triggered it.

But if you think movie sets are all about happy people smiling at each other and having a great time while trying not to go over budget on a huge franchise, then you have absolutely no idea what a movie set is really like.

@Donna:

You know, Donna, you pretty much made my point for me. The Lilly Tomlin thing was taken out of context, too.

Later, another video was released that showed the director on Tomlin's movie going bat shit crazy, screaming obscenities at Tomlin, basically dressing her down in front of everyone on set, storming around shouting like a mad man — so we have absolutely NO IDEA what really happened in the original Tomlin video to provoke her response.

So you hate Tomlin now because of a video that had no explanation around it.

I have no idea whether Tomlin or Bale are assholes based on a snippet of their lives. I'm sure if we had video of some of the things we've said to people — to our spouses, perhaps — that could prove to be pretty fucking embarrassing, too.

I'm not even a huge Bale fan, but I'm sure as hell not going to judge him based on this.

I love Bale, and think he's a great actor. Apparently this recording is from July a few days before getting arrested. You could tell in those press junkets he did for The Dark Knight that he seemed like he was trying to control his temper. I think he was very stressed at the time with several things, and there also may have been some sadness deep down about Heath not being there as the movie was out. He also seemed to have been going from movie to movie simultaneously, so I'm sure the stress adds on.

Anyways, not saying any of it is an excuse for how he acted, because it was very out of line. He should be ashamed of himself. However, you can't fully judge the entire situation based on a 3 minute recording.

I really dont think that this is nearly bad enough to suddenly stop likeing the guy or somthing. Since all we know is that the DP messed with the scene for a 2nd time and Bale lost it, but its not like he attacked someone, and we also dont know if there isnt more going on between those two besides this incident, its also possible that it was a really really good scene for him that he didnt want to have to redo. Who knows, I just dont see why this should really matter to anyone else without haveing all the facts. (everyone yells sometimes).

While it may have been frustrating, and the DP may have pulled an amateur move, I don't see how that gives Mr. Bale the right to speak to him that way. He's just one worker among many, and is by no means a showrunner. This is prima donna entitlement at its worst.

Yes, it sounds as though Christian Bale overreacted. However, unless you were there, careful how you judge him.

I totally agree with Jojo. Don't jump to conclusions here. Walking into an actor's sight line might seem like a minor offense to the uninitiated but it is the first thing you learn NEVER to do on a movie set. That Shane Hurlbut did this repeatedly must have been incredibly frustrating to an intense actor like Christian Bale. He is right to call Hurlbut an amateur. The alternative would be to call him an inconsiderate jerk. On a feature film with the budget of this one the crew has the time to prepare for the set-up before the actors arrive. If there is a problem you must wait until after the take to investigate it and fix it. It sounds as though Mr. Hurlbut was repeatedly behaving in a rude and thoughtless manner or he's so insecure about his lighting that he can't sit still and watch the take without going out on set and trying to figure out what's wrong. I've worked on Hollywood film sets for decades and I've yet to see or hear of a director of photography walking out on set during a take to "check the lighting."

Also in agreement with Jojo re: Lily Tomlin. Please see the COMPLETE clip of David O'Russell having his tantrum before you cast blame on Lily Tomlin. She is a professional who was driven to madness by an unprofessional director. Ask George Clooney about David O'Russell,

So much for the glamor of movie making.

After careful thought. Think about this people. Bale is a method actor. HE NEVER BREAKS CHARACTER! If you were a method actor who had a lighting man walk onto the set DURING A SCENE, how do you think you would react? A completely unnecessary distraction that any professional lighting man would have taken into account considering that he is working with an incredibly famous actor who is completely immersed in the set's environment. Factor in how famous and important you are, not only making you react the way you do, but how much your status affects everyone on set that is in front of you. Even how Christian Bale's upbringing would have played an affect in this situation.

There are too many factors that would go into the situation, therefor making judgment off limits towards christian bale. He is an actor, not a sandwich counter employee. Of course he's going to react the way he did people. Lets be real for a moment.

I also think this is just proof of how seriously this movie is being taken. I think we might even have a movie better than T3 on our hands people. Obviously Christian Bale is this critical about one thing, it couldn't suck. Gosh I sound like a chode.

Of course actor´s mess up their lines and dp´s can make mistakes with camera movements or stuff like that…that´s absolutely normal. But it´s not the same thing than when you are walking on the background and you know that the cameras are rolling and actor´s are concentrated on what they are doing!!

Ps: Bale asks the director did he see this and the Director reply´s "I Wasn´t watching." May i ask what the hell was he doing? Shouldn´t director watch a scene while it´s being filmed??
It´s really interesting to see this movie :)

To be honest, he seemed trapped in charachter. Notice how close the screaming was to the scenes in the trailers. This poor photog Dir. is trying to standup to a guy coming out of a Futuristic War scene….good luck. Being a fan of both the Movie Franchise and Bale I have to say im still excited about the project. Im rooting for you guys… I want to see the final cut and the next 2 movies !!!
