Nic Cage as Magnum P.I.?

Here is a rumor worth killing

I have never made it much of a secret that I think Nicolas Cage is a terrible actor, he is the king of over-acting. The only thing I can think of that he was remotely good in was Adaptation and I haven't revisited that flick in a while and have no intentions to. I know, stop rushing to the comments and typing Leaving Las Vegas, I have never seen it and I may add it to my Cinematic Revival queue and give some comments on it, but as much as I would like the guy to show me a good performance I haven't yet been able to bring myself to watch that particular film.

As Cage gets ready to unleash a second National Treasure movie on us (for the record I have grown to enjoy the first one as a mindless late night watch) we are now hearing rumors that good ol' Nic is potentially going to step into Tom Selleck's old shoes as the lead in the feature film adaptation of the 1980s TV series Magnum P.I., to be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber.

The news is being reported by IGN who quote several sources for the rumor citing The Daily Express saying, "Nicolas likes the mix of comedy and crime-solving in the script." The paper also claims that the project fell apart 18 months ago when Ricky Gervais rejected the notion of playing Higgins to George Clooney's Magnum.

I can't imagine a picture falling apart just because they didn't get someone to play Higgins alongside George Clooney, even though Gervais is a comedic genius and would have been great in the part.

IGN reports that should Cage sign on, they would begin casting the role of Higgins with an anticipated release of 2009. My guess is that we aren't going to hear anymore from this one for a while.
