New ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie More than Just a Rumor

What's next from 1989?

Well, in 1989 we saw the release of Batman, The Little Mermaid and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In 2008 we had The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones and the Nuked Fridge and The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning so it only seems appropriate we go back to the well one more time and bring back Ghostbusters since ‘89 was the last time we saw the protoplasmic ghost hunters on the big screen.

Variety has done a little digging into a story that started at E! when Dan Aykroyd gave the following interview:

The two writers he refers to are “The Office” co-exec producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky and Variety seems to think the new film won’t exactly be a Ghostbusters 3 as much as it will be a jumping off point for a new group to take over busting duties.

That said it is believed original castmembers Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson could return as they are expected to all take part as the voice cast in a new videogame based on the famous films from the ’80s as David recently mentioned in his latest Shallow End article, “The Future of Movies? Video Games: The Sequel“.

Eisenberg and Stupnitsky just penned the Jack Black, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse starrer Year One for Columbia (due out June 19, 2009) and was directed by Ramis.

There has been plenty of talk over the years of a new Ghostbusters film and folks such as Aykroyd and Ramis have never altogether squashed the idea and it seems there was a reason.

Looking a little closer at 1989 tells me we now need Lethal Weapon 5, Back to the Future IV, Driving Miss Daisy 2 and the much anticipated sequel to Glory.

Don’t forget, 1989 also brought us "License to Kill" and in 2008 we get "Quantum of Solace." Also, in 1989 we saw "Star Trek V" and had it not been pushed back, in 2008 we would have gotten "Star Trek: The Reboot." Can’t wait until 2027.
