@Jennifer: Well, you have to admit Synecdoche, New York was absolutely fantastic. In my opinion, the best movie of year (followed by Hunger and Che). And I know you may find some choices ridiculous, but I for one am a bit tired of all these endless accolades from Slumdog, or Benjamin Button, et cetera. Slumdog was a great crowd-pleaser, but nothing staggering or inventive. Benjamin Button was fairly milddling, and dissapointing in comparison to the other movies of Fincher.

This is what happens when movie critics become too immersed in their own little world. I think, to them, it almost feels like being contrary to popular opinion is always the way to show how much taste you really have. Sometimes the herd's foolish. Often, in fact. Sometimes it's got a point.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Manohla was making the most sense to me. A.O Scott, Abigail Breslin?! Bridges?! I think you just boarded the crazy train.

I can understand wanting to break away from the monotony of the lists this year, and I applaud some of their choices, particularly Michelle Williams and Sally Hawkins. But some of these are absurd.

There's some good inclusions on there – nice to see someone paying attention to The Visitor, came back from that today and loved it – but I will agree with a number of people in that a number of the picks make them seem like they're trying to make a statement, particularly Dargis' Synecdoche binge in Best Supporting Actress, the same's inclusion of Herzog as Best Actor in what I believe is a documentary, and A.O. Scott's giving a nod to Abigail Breslin in Kitt Kettridge.

Oh, and Jeff Bridges for Iron Man – why? As cool as he was, he coasted through that film. Jeff Bridges being Jeff Bridges-with-an-evil-twist isn't exactly justification for a give-this-guy-an-Oscar-nom call.

Obviously this is a joke or they really haven't been to any recent screenings.

Dargis even puts 4 performance of the same film in best supporting – what the heck???

The Edge Of Heaven is a good film (I'm German) but please, there were so many better films in 2008.

Where is Kate Winslet? Elsa Zilberstein? David Kross?

I can't believe that Kristin Scott-Thomas's performance in "I've Loved You So Long" was on only two critics' lists. And although I haven't seen "Doubt" yet, I am very surprised that neither Philip Seymour Hoffman nor Meryl Streep's performances were left off these lists.

I'm pleased with the mention of Michelle Williams' Wendy and Lucy and Synecdoche, New York :)

I'm not pleased however with neither of the critics mentioning Kate Winslet, for either performance.

these lists are just…laughable. the only thing i agree with at all is Anne Hathaway being mentioned on every critic's list and Sally Hawkins being listed twice. besides that, it's a joke and shouldn't be viewed as anything other than that. it isn't a matter of preferring foreign or indie or blockbuster films, these critics seem disinterested in actually picking the BEST performances, the ones that often transcend the films they occupy, instead opting intentionally to avoid picking ones other critics have chosen as the best.

I just saw "Let the Right One In," and I must say that it was probably my favorite film of the year. Great, great movie. I highly recommend it if you have not seen it. It is an unexpectedly beautiful story.

Dargis at least put Ledger in Supporting Actor. But yeah, all in all they seem to be making a statement with their supporting actor pics, rather then choosing the strongest performances.

I think Rosemarie DeWitt is the brightest star on the horizon. I loved her in "Cinderella Man" and now in "Rachel Getting Married," she simply outshines even the lead, Anne Hathaway. I hope we are able to see a lot more of her.

And again Michael Shannon is missing . WTF, he maybe the only supporting player this year who, IMO, gave a performance that could rival Heath Ledgers. Oh and a friend of mine saw Benjamin Button the other day and safe to say she returned unharmed.

I am very happy to see that all three critics agree that Eddie Marsan should be nominated for Best Supporting Actor. I just saw Happy-Go-Lucky last night and he was terrific in the film.
