I didn't know he was going to be in the movie, and I honestly didn't recognize him until about halfway through. But I feel like with big stars on a project like this that's trying to privilege the source material, it really has to be all or nothing, so that no one star steals the spotlight. Sin City went with all, Watchmen went with none. I could really just see all the advertising becoming for "Tom Cruise in Watchmen," which I think would have hurt the overall impression of the movie despite the quality of his performance (which I don't deny would have been excellent; no matter what I think of him personally, I can't deny him as an actor). @<a href="#comment-4061" rel="nofollow">dre</a>: You're definitely right on that account. (My fiancé went to a casting call for the role in Collateral that went to Jamie Foxx, so he got filled in on all the requirements that Cruise places on his productions.) In the end, I'm glad that there are no major stars attached to this, so that the story and the look of the film can stay front and center. Besides, and I'm thoroughly regretting not having my copy on hand as I join the Watchmen discussions, but isn't Veidt explicitly English in the book?
