Well, he had a small part in Tropic Thunder. I didn't know he was going to be in the movie, and I honestly didn't recognize him until about halfway through. But I feel like with big stars on a project like this that's trying to privilege the source material, it really has to be all or nothing, so that no one star steals the spotlight. Sin City went with all, Watchmen went with none. I could really just see all the advertising becoming for "Tom Cruise in Watchmen," which I think would have hurt the overall impression of the movie despite the quality of his performance (which I don't deny would have been excellent; no matter what I think of him personally, I can't deny him as an actor).

@dre: You're definitely right on that account. It's like when I saw Burn after Reading, I was wondering why Brad Pitt had gotten an "and" billing. And then halfway through, it became clear.

Veidt is of German heritage.

Agree with Brad, Cruise would have been perfect for the role. What we know of Cruise the actor would have suited the part. As for Cruise taking over the movie, it's not like he made Magnolia or Tropic Thunder a Tom Cruise movie.

SPOILER ALERT: We know Snyder and Cruise talked about it but I think the biggest reason they didn't move forward is because certain elements of the story (namely the mystery of who is behind the murders) would have become very obvious. When Veidt is "killed", the audience would have asked first, "Why was Cruise in this movie?" and then moments later, "Oh, nevermind. It's because he's not dead and behind it all."

@Brad Brevet: I don't know, I'm mixed on Cruise. He probably would have given a perfectly solid performance, but he's a bit egomaniacal. The movie would have ended up all about him, and it would have added a few million to the special effects budget with his insistence on disguising his shortness. (My fiancé went to a casting call for the role in Collateral that went to Jamie Foxx, so he got filled in on all the requirements that Cruise places on his productions.) In the end, I'm glad that there are no major stars attached to this, so that the story and the look of the film can stay front and center.

Besides, and I'm thoroughly regretting not having my copy on hand as I join the Watchmen discussions, but isn't Veidt explicitly English in the book? I don't think I could buy Cruise with an accent.

@aerinpegadrak: I don't think Cruise would look any worse than Goode with blonde hair, but I think he fits the character perfectly. On top of that, he wouldn't have to be blonde. Blasphemy, I know, but just saying. :)

Who WOULD look like exactly like Ozymandias? I don't think anyone's quite that sculpted. I disagree with Cruise, I don't think he would look good as a blonde.
