Apple has made available the first trailer for Rob Marshall's Nine starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren.

Nine is a musical adaptation inspired by the Federico Fellini film 8 1/2 that follows the life of world famous film director Guido Contini (Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life including his wife (Cotillard), his mistress (Cruz), his film star muse (Kidman), his confidant and costume designer (Dench), an American fashion journalist (Hudson), the whore from his youth (Fergie) and his mother (Loren). The film is directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago). The original 1982 Broadway production of Nine, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, won five Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Check out the trailer below and 37 screen caps below that and then click here to watch it in high-definition.

I can tell you this much, Fergie looks like she has nailed Saraghina and the film overall looks like it is going to be a sure fire Oscar contender. Can't wait for it to hit theaters on November 25. It makes me want to go watch Fellini's original all over again…

I stopped watching Die Hard for 2 minutes to watch this. It's O.K, can't see anything mind blowing just yet. O.K, back to Die Hard.

I'm not a fan of musicals, which is not to say that I haven't enjoyed them. The first stage play I ever went to see was at the age of 15 was "Hello Dolly." I sat right up front where the dancers were kicking over my head. It was a total body experience. That's live theatre. I have never had a disappointing experience with live performance in any form. There's an immediecy that can never be replaced.

However, since it is lost in a film version there are only two factors that can bridge the void for me: stellar intimate performance, presupposing the writing is also excellent. So I withhold judgement on this film. I'll say this, it's not cheesy. And bravo for casting. Daniel Day Lewis in a musical? Is there anything this guy can not excel at? And Sophia Loren once again in a dramatic role. Bravissimo!

If this does go up for an Oscar, Hugh Jackman will definitely have his day.

Yep, I'll see it. I'm not a fan of musicals for the most part, with few exceptions, but this has a good cast, so I'll give it a shot. It surely looks like an Oscar contender.

Looks great!
I love musicals, I loved Chicago, so I think I'm gonna love this one too. =)

I actually watched Fellini 8¹/² a couple of months ago in preparation for this movie. But I… fell asleep. :/
No hard feelings though, Fellini is really not my cup of tea. Same happened with Amarcord. I think I just don't understand him right now. I'm a bad, bad cinephile! =P

But I'm glad I watched (or tried too) the original, anyway. It gives me a better perspective for the trailer already!

PS: wasn't this movie going to open on 9/9/09? they delayed it to november?

Hmmmm looks interesting, feels a little Chicago-y but hopefully it's just as good or better.

@Leandro Dubost: Fell asleep during Amarcord? For shame. :)

As for the release date you are thinking of "9" the animated film from Focus.

Okay, Brad, you've finally sold me on this… with the help of the trailer. On my to do list: Watch "8 1/2" before November.

This is by far the best trailer for a 2009 film I've seen thus far. I loved Chicago, and the song in this trailer is amazing. What a cast, especially Daniel Day-Lewis who looks pretty awesome and Judi Dench has some great dialogue in the trailer.

I bought 8 1/2 on Criterion DVD not long ago and thought it was terrific, and it's cool to see stuff from that film here. Can't wait for this one, bring on the Oscars.

After just finishing 8 1/2, I can say this movie could definitely be an oscar contender. The only thing I wish is that the whole thing could be shot in italian, then it would be perfect.

I love musicals, and I adore Daniel Day-Lewis! Have never heard him sing, but I'm sure he will be amazing in Nine as he's always been in every one of his past characters. He's defiinitely the best! Can't wait till November 25th!
