MY GRADE: D-

Agree with the above guy… a few of the scenes were "DAMNNN THATS AWESOME" …because they were exactly like the scenes in the game, but this time on 70mm. The action was good… Marky was ok as Max (he talked exactly like the game's protagonist), Olga Kurylenko was hot (was good to see her after Hitman), Mila Kunis was a disaster with guns.

The supporting characters including the villain (Lupino) were very faithful to the game…Special effects and cinematography were top notch .. settings were EXACTLY like the game… i was sort of disappointed that the storyline deviated from the game's plot (that's where i call the film trash)…

Bullet time… i found it petty great because that was the hallmark of the game…. so yeah, we liked it because we had played the game … for an average viewer all the above doesn't mean a thing.

Do you think being a fan of the game affected your opinion all that much?

The acting overall was just ok…Wahlberg did what Wahlberg does, which suited the role, the supporting cast was pretty bad though, aside from Beau Bridges and, surprisingly, Mila Kunis. I thought she did a great job and made it almost believable that she could be a killer.

The one thing that REALY surprised me was how relatively little action and violence were in the movie. The first 40 minutes were fairly slow, save for a few little action scenes thrown in.

Overall, as a fan of the game, I think it did the game justice well enough and will definitely pick it up when it hits dvd.

The Max Payne games were both fun and reasonably interesting with its noir-style comic storytelling, so it is a little disheartening to hear that the film ended up being so mediocre. Still, I wasn't expecting much. The curse of the video game movies lives on it seems (of course, some of these games that get picked really need to be left alone to begin with – that means you Uwe!). I guess I'll just have to watch Mortal Kombat to cheer myself up :P

Not a moron at all, and now I am more interested in reading your opinion after you see it. I would instantly say you will like it more than Hitman, but I don't have a gamer's perspective to speak from so it would be hard for me to compare in those terms.

I hope you do like it. I may not enjoy the movie personally, but it only makes me a better reviewer to hear the opposing side of the argument. :)

Although yes my fears of the movie turning out to be as horrendous as Doom or Resident Evil thrive …. yes i did read your reasoning and its very valid … the movie must've been a tasteless snorefest, especially for a non gamer…i'm gonna find out on Sunday anyways

YES i LOVED Hitman! That might automatically qualify me as a moron, but i am a devoted fan of the Hitman games and i thought the transition to the big screen was pretty awesome. The filmmakers were very careful to be as faithful to the game as possible…. very minute details were considered which added to the joy…like the scene where he walks the hotel corridor (the game's 3rd person view) and plants his pistol in the toilet (direct lift from the game, including the colors and textures), or the scene where he is on top of the building with the red neon sign glowing…. the way Hitman walked… the gunfight with the villains brother…. the game's logo that keeps appearing throughout the film….even the guns Hitman uses were the exact same…. lots of things i don't even remember all of them.

There was one touch of genius where Hitman escapes from his hotel room and lands on a different floor to find a couple of kids playing the Hitman game on an Xbox…

So yeah, for a gamer it was pretty entertaining.

Out of curiosity, did you like Hitman?

While making a game based movie a filmmaker is faced with a serious issue – should he make a movie for the game fanboys, or for the mass population. If he goes for the latter, the fanboys get disappointed because the storyline doesn't follow the game's plot, and if he goes for the former, then critics thrash the movie.

I guess there is no antidote to this problem.

Although Hitman wasn't exactly the worst movie in the world. I mean it wasn't made for Oscars was it? It was aimed at youngsters looking for a jolly good time with guns, girls and action (and for the game-movie transition). And you said Payne is better than Hitman … so does it really deserve a D Grade? I haven't watched it yet…but seriously, a D Grade??

And my question is this – Do we really need someone like Roger Ebert to review a game based movie? I think not. My 2 cents.
