Movie Review: Max Payne (2008)

We're going to need a crash cart over here!

The best way to describe Max Payne is to say that if it was a better movie it wouldn't be called Max Payne and need a video game association to gain attention. Video game adaptations continue to prove they are not a viable option for a good movie, just a movie to be sold to 14-year-old gamers willing to leave their Playstation long enough to watch a movie that isn't far from the digital world they spend the majority of their lives in; lifeless and without reason.

Max Payne is by no means an awful movie, but it gives new meaning to mediocrity and sub-standard filmmaking. This is a flick geared for style without substance and on that note it succeeds gloriously. Mark Wahlberg stars as our title character, a cop that has lost his wife and young daughter in what initially appears to be an armed robbery. Payne was able to kill two of the intruders, but has spent his life in the Cold Case division trying to track down the third man that got away.

Enter BB Hensley (Beau Bridges), head of security at the pharmaceutical company where Payne's wife once worked. Payne and BB reunite after Payne was recently attacked and his former partner was found dead in his apartment with Payne found lying unconscious at his side. Strange winged tattoos and recent murders can be tied to the death of Payne's wife as he gets closer and closer to the culprits.

I am sure savvy readers have probably already figured out the end of this film as I did just a few short minutes into it based on the actions of the characters, their relationships and their choice of employer. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this murder mystery out and considering the action is dedicated almost 100-percent to slow-motion gunplay there is very little to look forward to in-between. The lead antagonist played by Amaury Nolasco ("Prison Break") is quite possibly the least interesting bad guy you will ever see in a film. He gives off menacing glares and wields a machete for most of his screen time all while uttering maybe two complete sentences toward the end of the feature. You aren't scared of him and are given almost no reason to be as this Jacob's Ladder rip-off never feels unique.

Max Payne copies the slow motion tendencies from 300 (a technique destined to die very soon) and the look of Sin City. Those tendencies aided a pair of R-rated movies, but have now been watered down to gain the attention of a younger audience. I don't blame Fox for doing it, otherwise this movie would never get made and they wouldn't make big bucks off opening weekend box and unrated DVD sales, but for people that enjoy quality filmmaking and hope to see something more than a 90 minute video game vignette are going to have to look elsewhere.

The fact they trusted this in the hands of hack helmer John Moore is tip-off enough and Wahlberg himself is proving to be good for nothing more than character acting. Give me more Wahlberg roles like the one in The Departed, but like Orlando Bloom and James Franco he is continually proving he can't carry a film on his own. Mila Kunis as Russian mobster Mona Sax is given nothing to do and appears to be happy with that fact. Meanwhile Ludacris surprisingly devolves from the small bit of acting talent he showed in Crash and it's hard to tell if he is even awake in his scenes.

I will say Max Payne is better than Hitman, but that's only in the sense that it doesn't have any of those gut-wrenching attempts at real drama. Strangely enough, I am not sure if I should give more credit to Hitman for trying as opposed to Max Payne, which gave up from the outset. This film flat-lined from the start and despite all the gun play offered up the movie never gained a pulse.

It seems you haven't played the game… i guess non gamers will NEVER like a movie that is based on a game, no matter how hard the filmmakers try.

While making a game based movie a filmmaker is faced with a serious issue – should he make a movie for the game fanboys, or for the mass population. If he goes for the latter, the fanboys get disappointed because the storyline doesn't follow the game's plot, and if he goes for the former, then critics thrash the movie.

I guess there is no antidote to this problem.

Although Hitman wasn't exactly the worst movie in the world. I mean it wasn't made for Oscars was it? It was aimed at youngsters looking for a jolly good time with guns, girls and action (and for the game-movie transition). And you said Payne is better than Hitman … so does it really deserve a D Grade? I haven't watched it yet…but seriously, a D Grade??

And my question is this – Do we really need someone like Roger Ebert to review a game based movie? I think not. My 2 cents.

I felt absolutely nothing while watching Max Payne, that's the reason for the D grade. As to critics thrashing the movie, I hope you are looking beyond my grade and also reading my reasoning for it. Based on my reasoning does it read like a film that deserves higher than a D?

Please, if you go see it this weekend come back and share your thoughts on it, I would be interested to get your opinion.

Out of curiosity, did you like Hitman?

Yes of course I'm watching it on Sunday.. I am a BIG fan of the game :)

Although yes my fears of the movie turning out to be as horrendous as Doom or Resident Evil thrive …. yes i did read your reasoning and its very valid … the movie must've been a tasteless snorefest, especially for a non gamer…i'm gonna find out on Sunday anyways

YES i LOVED Hitman! That might automatically qualify me as a moron, but i am a devoted fan of the Hitman games and i thought the transition to the big screen was pretty awesome. The filmmakers were very careful to be as faithful to the game as possible…. very minute details were considered which added to the joy…like the scene where he walks the hotel corridor (the game's 3rd person view) and plants his pistol in the toilet (direct lift from the game, including the colors and textures), or the scene where he is on top of the building with the red neon sign glowing…. the way Hitman walked… the gunfight with the villains brother…. the game's logo that keeps appearing throughout the film….even the guns Hitman uses were the exact same…. lots of things i don't even remember all of them.

There was one touch of genius where Hitman escapes from his hotel room and lands on a different floor to find a couple of kids playing the Hitman game on an Xbox…

So yeah, for a gamer it was pretty entertaining.

Of course for a non gamer the film seemed ludicrous.

Not a moron at all, and now I am more interested in reading your opinion after you see it. I would instantly say you will like it more than Hitman, but I don't have a gamer's perspective to speak from so it would be hard for me to compare in those terms.

I hope you do like it. I may not enjoy the movie personally, but it only makes me a better reviewer to hear the opposing side of the argument. :)

I thought Hitman was better than the previews made it look for sure, but I still wasn't too wowed by it. The only video game movie I thought was remotely good was the first Resident Evil (and likely because I never played those games).

The Max Payne games were both fun and reasonably interesting with its noir-style comic storytelling, so it is a little disheartening to hear that the film ended up being so mediocre. Still, I wasn't expecting much. The curse of the video game movies lives on it seems (of course, some of these games that get picked really need to be left alone to begin with – that means you Uwe!). I guess I'll just have to watch Mortal Kombat to cheer myself up :P

I played both the games and loved the story line from both. If the movie is done in anyway like the game than it should be good. I think it was not cast very well but I am going to see it tomorrow so I'll just see. I am disgusted that Max Payne is pg-13…Hitman sucked balls by the way.

Saw the movie last night. Not nearly as good as I was hoping, nor was it as bad as I feared. I thought it captured the feel of the game very well, had tons of style and had some decent action.

The acting overall was just ok…Wahlberg did what Wahlberg does, which suited the role, the supporting cast was pretty bad though, aside from Beau Bridges and, surprisingly, Mila Kunis. I thought she did a great job and made it almost believable that she could be a killer.

The one thing that REALY surprised me was how relatively little action and violence were in the movie. The first 40 minutes were fairly slow, save for a few little action scenes thrown in.

Overall, as a fan of the game, I think it did the game justice well enough and will definitely pick it up when it hits dvd.

Do you think being a fan of the game affected your opinion all that much?

Honestly, yeah, it probably did. Even though it was quite different from the game, it had enough little things that really stuck out. Gognitti Storage, the bullet time sections, the sections of the Ragnarök sign that werent lit up….little things that made me think "Holy shit, thats awesome!" But are things that wouldnt mean anything to people who never played the game.

Right i watched it a few hours ago too… the movie was ok….splendid in parts, but trash in some other… i went with a bunch of my buddies who have ALL played and loved the game… it was the same group that watched Hitman too… i guess watching a movie with a huge group does make any movie more likeable,.. and the fact that we were all there to watch Max on the big screen helped matters more

Agree with the above guy… a few of the scenes were "DAMNNN THATS AWESOME" …because they were exactly like the scenes in the game, but this time on 70mm. The action was good… Marky was ok as Max (he talked exactly like the game's protagonist), Olga Kurylenko was hot (was good to see her after Hitman), Mila Kunis was a disaster with guns.

The supporting characters including the villain (Lupino) were very faithful to the game…Special effects and cinematography were top notch .. settings were EXACTLY like the game… i was sort of disappointed that the storyline deviated from the game's plot (that's where i call the film trash)…

Bullet time… i found it petty great because that was the hallmark of the game…. so yeah, we liked it because we had played the game … for an average viewer all the above doesn't mean a thing.

I just saw it and thought there was no justice to the game. They put game 1 and 2 together in the worst way and Walberg sounded nothing like Max Payne nor did he dress like him. There wasn't near enough voice overs that there should have been. The pg 13 rating was a terrible move and the climax was awful. At no point in the games did he take the drugs himself they were always forced into him.

MY GRADE: D-

I was accually REALLY looking forward to this movie…not sure why, after saeeing it i wouldnt say it was a bad movie, it was accually an enjoyable watch, but it seemed to me it didnt get going fast enough, and it was just….lacking somthing overall. I tihnk the problem with the videogame adaptation movies isnt that the video games suck or have a bad story, but that they need some more time and effort put into them, if they put a bit more into this it could have been really really good instead of just alright. Just my 2 cents.
