More Out of Toronto, Including Standout 'Mother and Child' and 'Dogtooth'
Defendor, Daybreakers, Chloe, Micmacs and more...
I just went through the films showing at the Toronto International Film Festival once again and added a few new titles to the database as a result along with a few new images for those films.
First off I added 16 images and two trailers (one to the right) for the Greek film Dogtooth which has enjoyed considerable word-of-mouth since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the Un Certain Regard sidebar and the Youth Prize, and just yesterday Kino International picked up the film for US distribution. Dogtooth is described as a metaphorical film with socio-political messages, follows a father convinced that the best way for his children to remain uncontaminated by the world is to completely cut them off from it. Give the trailer a watch (NOTE: It's not entirely safe for work) to the right and then click here for more information and a look at the images.
Next is the Woody Harrelson action/comedy/drama Defendor which has just been picked up by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group. I added new images for Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Micmacs a tire-larigot, which will be distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. Added two images from the Atom Egoyan dramatic thriller Chloe starring Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore and added new images from the festival circuit hit A Prophet as well as a gruesome little image from Daybreakers. Click on any of those titles to get more info on the films and to check out the images.
Finally, I added the Rodrigo Garcia feature Mother and Child to the database, which received some great buzz and stars a whole fleet of talent, two of which — Annette Bening and Naomi Watts — are receiving some excellent quotes from those that saw the film.
"Rodrigo Garcia's "Mother and Child" involves the stories of three women, and centers around pregnancy. Viewed simply as a plot, this could have been the material of soap opera. Garcia however creates characters so particular and quirky that we're really more interested in them than in what happens to them." ~ Roger Ebert
"Writer-director Rodrigo Garcia is a master of multiple narratives whose storylines often crisscross in unexpected ways. He deploys this strategy most effectively in Mother and Child, a happy-sad tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives. Some may find the film overly schematic, but Garcia smartly uses three parallel narratives to probe the extraordinary nature of motherhood." ~ Kirk Honeycutt
"Bening gives one of her very best performances as a potentially despicable woman who has carried her bitterness around for so long that it poisons her every interaction. Watts matches Bening's fire, making Elizabeth a manipulative, powerful woman whose motivations are left intriguingly vague." ~ Tim Grierson
"Rodrigo Garcia's reputation as a writer for and director of women will increase exponentially with Mother and Child, an insightfully observed and exceptionally acted ensemble piece precisely about what the title suggests. Rather too neatly drawing together three disparate story strands over the course of two hours, the picture has a methodical nature that requires dutiful attention to work through the expository underbrush. But it compellingly addresses human emotions, ties and behavior that could not be more elemental, and spotlights fantastic work by Naomi Watts, Annette Bening and Samuel L. Jackson, in particular. Critical support will bring this to the attention of discriminating audiences, but the sensitive, heavily femme-centric material poses a huge challenge in convincing the male public that this is something more than a very high-end Lifetime movie." ~ Todd McCarthy
Pete Hammond at The Envelope is already wondering if we may be in for another Hilary Swank and Annette Bening battle for Best Actress at the Oscars. Of course, Mother and Child is going to need distribution before that happens, but I wouldn't be surprised if we hear news on that soon.
On top of all that, I added two new images from the film which you can see here as well as the following clip.
