Mickey Rourke, Sean Penn and Gerald Posner: Hearsay Battle Royale

Ahhhhh, new media... So useful...

Well, the race for the Oscar Best Actor just went up a notch with a dirty tactics article over at The Daily Beast quoting an alleged private text message sent from Mickey Rourke to an unnamed "Los Angeles entertainment honcho." The alleged text from Gerald Posner's report reads as such:

Look seans an old friend of mine and i didnt buy his performance at all-thought he did an average pretend acting like he was gay besides hes one of the most homophobic people i kno

This is coupled with a second hand report following Rourke's appearance on "Late Night With David Letterman" in which he supposedly said to someone backstage, "I'm not even sure he'll get a nomination."

Posner got a quote from Rourke's publicist saying he is "completely unaware of the text" and the article then goes on to quote people accepting the text as fact and mentioning how truthful Rourke is, even to his own detriment. Posner himself seems convinced of the text's legitimacy with a final paragraph saying:

Rourke's bashing of Penn takes it beyond the studio level and makes it much more personal, especially since the two are friends. It is the first time anyone can recall an actor dishing another actor so openly for the performance.

I love how Posner refers to Rourke's supposed "bashing" as being done "openly." What a joke! None of it would have been made public had he not reported it. Of course, this is what has happened in our world where gossip has taken over and the truth is no longer important. Even if Mickey Rourke didn't like Sean Penn's performance in Milk what would that change about Rourke's performance in The Wrestler? Would that lessen his performance in some way?

I guess you could call me just as much of a problem as Posner in this case since I am regurgitating his article and continuing the spread of potential misinformation, but there isn't any other way to comment on it in this case, however hypocritical it may make me look.

Mickey Rourke is completely nuts. Which is why I love the guy regardless.

Disgusting piece of shoddy journalism

The power that be are terrified of Rourke showing up in a purple tux at the Oscars and coming back the second year to present the Best Actress award

Posner is a clown that shilled for the government and hasnt been on TV for some time now…

GIVE THE MAN HIS OSCAR

It may not say anything about Rourke's performance, but bad behavior can definitely play a part in loosing the Oscar. Eh, Russell Crowe?

Are we even sure this text message is legit? And since when is Sean Penn homophobic?

I'd also like to add that Rourke shouldn't throw stones, since it was indeed he who used the word "faggot" not to long ago.

@Garrett: You hit the nail on the head with "Are we even sure this text message is legit? And since when is Sean Penn homophobic?"

Who knows, and yet this story is already making the rounds and sure to hurt Rourke no matter what. I wouldn't mind the story as much if it didn't involve a bunch of anonymous sources.

Even if this text message was legit ….. which it isnt…..

it is a private conversation….

Rourke didnt hold a press conference and announce this…

two fabricated private conversations are now linked to a dozen websites

you know for sure this shows up in that fruit loop Page Six in the NY POST tommorrow

this country and what passes for journalism is pathetic

Rourke is the man…..give the man what he deserves

I just finished the Wrestler and I must say that I loved it. Mickey Rourke was made for that role. The ending of that movie was powerful! Darren Aronofsky is a genius! It going to be a close race between Rourke and Penn for Best Actor thats for sure. In my opinion that could very well be the closest of them all.

We all know that the two are gonna get a nod. Both performances were great, and both will probably bash on each other. Thats what you call COMPETITION. TRASH TALK. On the football field, the two teams dont compliment each other on their last play, they intimidate them in any way they can, even if the 2 teams are friends. The Oscars are the same. Only one can win, so the talk will begin. That's the game!\
And do we even know if this sourse is legit….this could be as fake as the good review that "The Animal' got a few years back!

@joker47: I personally think it's sad that anyone could be content with the Oscars being a "competition" where "trash talk" is justified. I'm not claiming that you are, but the reality of the Oscars is not about trash talk. Does Meryl Streep bash Emma Thompson? Does Leonardo DiCaprio stab his Kate Winslet voodoo doll before he says goodnight, screaming "This is for that Titanic snub!"? Certainly not, because I think there is a larger amount of class expected when it comes to the Oscars. This isn't a sport. It's an awards show.

Sorry for those examples, they were the first mildly funny things that came to mind.

This whole gossip culture is full of shit. I mean, have you considered the possibility that Rourke is a person himself? With the basic right to privacy? Come on. It's this whole industry, marketing lies and gossip in order to make a quick buck. At the expense of other people's emotions and human rights.

He doesn't even supply proof of Rourke saying that. And why the hell does he feel like he needs to announce it to the whole world?

This is also an attempt to discredit both of these actor's reputation and chances in the Academy. Rourke, like Russel, will be attacked on the grounds of his supposed aggression and impoliteness, while certain idiots will take this as fact and look at Sean as a hypocritical homophobe. Nice job, Posner.
