'Meatballs' Scores Big a Second Week in a Row, 'Surrogates' Comes Up Second

Looks like 'Fame' won't be living forever

I am heading out the door for a Toy Story and Toy Story 2 3D double-feature, but I just couldn't leave without posting Steve Mason's early weekend box-office results in which Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is looking to score big for a second week in a row hitting $5.5 million on Friday and looking at a $22 million weekend and a second week at the top. Of course, this means Laremy's prediction saying that this weekend's new flick Fame would end up at the top is way off, as the critically panned remake only took in $3.8 million on Friday and Mason estimates will only hit $9.8 million for the weekend, just under $9 million short of Laremy's prediction.

It does, however, look like Laremy has the #2 slot nailed as Surrogates earned $5.1 million on Friday and is eying a $14.5 million weekend according to Mason.

This weekend's other new "wider" release, Pandorum, which went unscreened for critics here in Seattle, earned $1.5 million on Friday and will likely end around $4 million for the weekend.

Mason's Friday estimates are listed below and Laremy will be here on Sunday with a complete wrap-up. I will say this, at least he had Meatballs at $17 million as a close third. He just underestimated audience reaction for the animated kid flick, which must be pretty decent… perhaps I should take in a triple feature.

  1. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Sony) – $5.5 million
  2. Surrogates (Disney) – $5.1 million
  3. Fame (MGM) – $3.8 million
  4. The Informant! (Warner Bros) – $2.2 million
  5. Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself (Lionsgate) – $1.65 million

I'm really bummed that Pandorum won't even crack the top five. It was actually a surprisingly fascinating and engaging sci-fi horror, especially the direction and incredible production design. Oh well.

I'm rather proud of myself for calling this one. (Providing Surrogates fades fast, a prediction I stand by.)

Beginner's luck.

Not really surprising. Don't know why Laremy predicted Fame so high. It doesn't look appealing to anyone below 40. I think "Stepup2the Streets" is more this gen's style of "dance changes inner city yoots" movie. Surprised at Meatballs repeating though: everyone I've spoken to who've seen it (I simply can't bring myself to do that) hated it. I actually saw Pandorum. And, once again, Dennis Quaid was the worst thing in his movie. If he hadn't been in it, or the scenes of filler conversation between him and… others (don't wanna spoil it for anyone who wants to catch it) were annoying. 30 minutes of Quaid could've been shaved from this movie, and I'd have been thankful. Otherwise, it's a decent flick. Nothin' great. Just watchable once, y'know?

@k-dogg: It's funny you mention the thing about Meatballs, cause everyone I know, of all ages, including myself, loved it. It was actually really funny. In regards to Pandorum, I didn't think Dennis Quaid was a negative factor on the movie, but I will admit he wasn't anything special, either. He was probably better towards the end of the movie, though.

The movie is probably not bad, but I cannot find myself to not "don't see this movie or Hollywood will continue to screw up making adaptations of anything" on the subject of "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs." I understand the book was short and couldn't fuel a whole movie with a mound of creativity. But turning the whole thing into some phenomenon and not just the town just being a place where food falls was a big mistake. I read the book many times when I was kid (and have recently) and don't get why some man has to yell "Jello!" and jump into it when we could instead be laughing at some kid who has a cake with peas on it (like the book).
In my eyes, this movie is a failure.

Good for the Surrogates though; it'll do well enough to be considered a success. Pandorum sells me because it says "producers of Resident Evil" and looks amusing enough.
