Madness: 'Twilight' Fans Trample Children

I don't care if you are 14 or 40, it's time to be realistic

TMZ is reporting that an autograph session that was expected to feature Robert Pattinson, star of the upcoming film Twilight, an adaptation of the bestselling Stephenie Meyer novel was abruptly canceled as a horde of approximately 3,000 people grew out of control waiting for a chance to get a glimpse of the actor.

The short story at TMZ leading to this video reads as follows:

Kids were trampled, the cops were called in, blood was reportedly spilled — all over a chance to see a guy from a film that hasn't even opened yet.

Things got nasty at San Francisco's Stonestown Galleria this morning when a crowd of roughly 3000 anxious tweens grew out of control while waiting for a chance to see "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson.

The crowd — nearly 10 times larger than event officials prepared for — mutated into a mob scene when a push to get into the mall got so wild, that several kids fell under the crush. One girl reportedly broke her nose and another fainted.

No arrests were made and the event was canceled for obvious reasons.

I don't think a whole lot more needs to be said about the situation, but some of these Twilight fans need to check themselves. I don't care how old you are. If you classify yourself as a TwilightMOM or a 14-year-old hoping to get a glimpse at a man you have a crush on. This is ridiculous. The majority of these people wouldn't want to see Robert Pattinson if he wasn't playing a fictional character. Do they realize he isn't really Edward Cullen from the movie and his eyes aren't golden, he isn't a vampire and he isn't cold to the touch?

Here's the deal though, I'm pretty much cool with the infatuation, but the fact it leads to violence is not cool. Can't you people just form a single file line?

I'm pretty sure that the HP books were a lot more popular, but their fans were never this crazy.

I cannot believe that this happened. I am a huge Twilight fan and I would classify myself as pretty infatuated but this is ridiculous. It is true that Robert Pattinson is a mere actor who is portraying a character and I do believe that people need to put that in perspective. When I read about these mall signing events that were set up to promote the film I thought that they were a bad idea. Trying to cram someone like Robert Pattinson into a Hot Topic for a short two hours and expecting girls (and women) to be orderly with their opportunity of meeting him ticking down with the clock is a recipe for disaster.

I do think that Twilight fans should calm down and, as I have said before, gain some perspective that this is ONLY a book series and movie. I also think that responsibility should also be placed on those that set up the event (both the PR and mall event coordinators). They should have anticipated a larger crowd due to the growing audience and they should have had more security. I am not saying that the attendees were not responsible, but this phenomenon (especially surrounding Pattinson) has reached a level equal to boy-band fandom and event officials should use such events as models for preparation.

To quote Men in Black: "A person is smart; people are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it."

Embarassed to say that I am in my early 30s and have had a small crush on Robert Pattison since Harry Potter. Was recently "forced" into reading the Twilight series and was hooked. Combine the two and it's beyond embarassing. I don't really care whether or not he is playing Edward but all the attention just lets you see: a) he does look amazing in the movie… although much better when he's himself and not all "perfect". And b) his sense of humor… too cute. Now if I was 14 this would be acceptable, but I'm not :( Anyway… all that said people need to respect the other people around them in these situations. You're not impressing anyone while trampling the kid next to you.
