M. Night Shyamalan is Public Enemy #1 Because…
The why is what we are trying to figure out...
However, if my last film was Lady in the Water and it was unfairly judged before it was even screened for critics I would be a little pissed. If it then received a 29% rating and several of the reviews included the words on par with "ego" and "pretentious" I would be even more upset. This would tell me that the people reviewing the film didn't even give the film a chance. Here's a snippet from one such review:
A director's love letter to himself, the martyred, fashionably-dressed messiah whose work may someday save the world if only we'd let it.
I don't know if it is irony or hypocrisy, but that quote comes from Kevin Koehler who writes for something called
High on talk-heavy exposition and low on actual scares and thrills…
To this I can only say, Just because it is an M. Night film doesn't mean he is trying to scare you James from Sci-Fi Movie Page! This is what I am talking about going into the film and judging it based on what you see, not what you expect. Lady in the Water was a bedtime story. Like it or hate it, at least base your judgment on what it was.
The question now remains; Will The Happening be fairly or unfairly reviewed? Considering Fox is making sure reviews don't arrive online until day of release people won't be as influenced by buzz as normal so it may not matter. Then again, it may not matter anyway since they may be putting the film up against what appears to be an unexpected juggernaut as The Incredible Hulk has been showing the potential to outpace even Iron Man as awareness is much higher and people are getting quite excited as the general public is realizing it is Edward Norton starring in the film and trailers seem to be really raising interest.
Was it silly for Fox to put M. Night's new film up against The Incredible Hulk? Yes, as a matter of fact it was stupid! It should have been held until the end of August. Even though I am a fan of Night, I am not above realizing his last film was a flop and the public and critics aren't exactly in his corner at the moment. Putting an R-rated film up against a PG-13 film that R-rated audiences are going to go to is not a wise move. It also doesn't make sense to have an embargo in place considering the green-band trailers for The Happening don't really inspire interest. The red-band look fantastic, but you can't really show those during "American Idol" can you?
The Happening is going to be an interesting test.
Stay tuned next week as starting on Sunday I will be doing mini write-ups on all five of Night's previous films ultimately ending on Friday, June 13 with a preview and review of The Happening. Each one will take short evaluations of the film, Night's writing and directing, box-office, etc. Here's the schedule:
Sunday: The Sixth Sense (1999)
Monday: Unbreakable (2000)
Tuesday: Signs (2002)
Wednesday: The Village (2004)
Thursday: Lady in the Water (2006)
Friday: The Happening (2008)
EDIT: No, I didn't forget about Praying With Anger and Wide Awake, I just won't be covering them.
I hope to have some discussion on each film. Love 'em or leave 'em I think each one provokes good conversation.
