Ahhhh, dammit, that is the one I was trying to think of, La Vie en Rose. I knew they had another one. That makes three films for France that should have been considered. Yeah, I think something needs to change.

I have no disagreement on that front. If this whole "controversy" proves anything, it proves that the process of selecting foreign film nominees in the first place seriously needs to be overhauled.

That said, I'd bet even money had France submitted La Vie en Rose instead of the animated film (which, like Ratatouille, is going to be shuffled off to the Best Animated Feature category, not anything close to resembling a Best Picture category) it would have easily scored a nomination. Whether you like it or not (and I personally loved it), one cannot question it is just the type of film the Academy absolutely adores.

Yeah, I wasn't sure and I didn't really have the patience to sift through all the muck to find out, but that is one of the things that really needs to be looked at. If The Diving Bell and the Butterfly isn't French then just what the hell is? The Oscar rules are frightening when it comes to Foreign films.

To my understanding, because of the various funding issues and the nationalities of its writer, director and producers, Diving Bell and the Butterfly is inelligible as a foregin film submission from France. Granted, I am not 100% sure of this, but it is what I have heard from both other critics here in Seattle as well as through comments from friends online. Otherwise, I think it goes without saying Julian Schnabel's film would be the unquestioned frontrunner for the Oscar.
