Leterrier Directing ‘Clash of the Titans’ but Watch Out for ‘War of the Gods’

It seems this may be much ado about nothing...

Medusa from Clash of the Titans (1981)

Variety has an article announcing that Louis Leterrier is set to direct the Lawrence Kasdan-scripted remake of Clash of the Titans for Warner Bros. and in the same breath they pose a theory that it will come up against War of the Gods, a film scripted by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides that will be directed by Tarsem Singh (The Fall).

The article describes the two films as sword-and-sandal films, and both have their own mythology. However, I think the familiarity Clash of the Titans should have with the majority of audiences (at least in terms of Medusa) it may leave the window open for what could be a relatively fresh tale with War of the Gods. Even though both films will apparently be taking advantage of the green screen techniques Zack Snyder used with 300 I can’t imagine these two films looking anything alike considering Leterrier’s drive for popcorn action and Singh’s interest in stylistic storytelling. Basically, I think there is room for both… that is as long as they aren’t being released back-to-back, which I think we all know will not be the case.

The story of War of the Gods is described as a mythological tale set in war-torn ancient Greece, as the young warrior prince Theseus leads his men in a battle against evil that will see the gods fighting with soldiers against demons and titans.

Alternately, Clash of the Titans is a remake of the 1981 film starring Harry Hamlin as Perseus and Laurence Olivier as Zeus, in which Perseus, the son of Zeus, must overcome a series of obstacles to save his beloved Princess Andromeda, including cutting off the serpent-tressed head of Medusa, who can turn a man to stone with a single glance.

Clash was one of my favorite films as a child, but I haven’t seen it for some time. I really hope the Kasdan script turns out to be a good one, because I do know there is a great film using the framework of the old school story, especially considering the tools at the filmmaker’s disposal nowadays.

War of Gods is expected to start production by the end of the year, and while Warner Bros. has officially greenlit Clash there was no mention of an actual start date.
