Leona Lewis Will Sing ‘Avatar’ Theme Song…

So, Leona Lewis of “Bleeding Love” fame is going to be singing the title track for James Cameron’s Avatar. The song will be titled “I See You (Theme from Avatar)” and will be available when the soundtrack hits stores on December 15, three days prior to the film’s December 18 release. The song will be played over the credits, much like Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” for Titanic, which became one of the best-selling singles of all-time, the best selling single of 1998, Oscar Best Original Song winner, Grammy Award winner, Golden Globe Award winner, Billboard Music Award for the Soundtrack Single of the Year and ultimately helped Celine Dion sign a multi-year contract to perform nightly in a five-star theatrical show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.

In short, “My Heart Will Go On” was a massive success and A LOT of people liked it. Of course, this draws the disdain of online readers and writers whom have to go somewhere to hate everything that is popular and a lot of that hatred leaked out today.

Considering Lewis’s song will play over the credits for a movie and the fact it hasn’t been heard yet, you wouldn’t expect much hatred (or any for that matter), but don’t go assuming things you know just aren’t true.

Kevin Jagernauth at The Playlist sounded like a true fanboy (all while trying to act as if he isn’t one) and has pretty much formed his opinion of the song before he’s even heard the first note, “James Horner (who is also scoring the film) is going to be responsible for raping our ears again this time around with what is sure to be another combination of soggy, drippy orchestration, overwrought singing and awful lyrics. Of course, you can expect that this piece treacle is going to be flogged for a Best Song nomination…”

Simon Brew at Den of Geek was quite articulate in his understanding of the situation saying, “The team behind ‘My Heart Will Gone On’? Leona Lewis? My shit.” Not sure what that means.

Devin Faraci at CHUD lets his feelings be known in his headline: “Avatar to Have Schmaltzy End Credit Oscar Bait Song”

Katey Rich at Cinema Blend says, “The British singer will be filling in the Celine Dion role this time, having recorded the film’s end title song ‘I See You.’ The title doesn’t have quite the same ring as ‘My Heart Will Go On,’ but then again, maybe it won’t have the same ear-splitting quality either.”

Paul Tassi at JoBlo is the only one I saw reporting the news that wasn’t among the group filled with any kind of hate as he said, “The song is called ‘I See You (Theme from Avatar)’ and will play over the closing credits. I’m not sure anyone can beat Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from Titanic (the first song I ever learned how to play on the piano), but if anyone had a prayer, it’s the note-belting Lewis, the kind of over-the-top ballad singer you hardly ever see anymore in this day and age.”

What a wonderful world online movie reporting is eh? A song that is going to be played over the credits of a film by one of the music world’s most popular singers is already referred to as “treacle” and “shit” and the potential of having “ear-splitting quality”. I wonder what they will think once they have actually heard it.
