Keira Knightley Teaming with Romanek for Sci-Fi Thriller

Okay, this one has my attention

I have talked about Mark Romanek several times over the years including a look at his Directors Label music video DVD and comparing his music video for Madonna's "Bedtime Story" to Tarsem Singh's The Fall and The Cell. I was excited when he was assigned directorial duties on the remake of The Wolfman and disappointed when he dropped off the project to be replaced by Joe Johnston. As far as feature films go his only project is the Robin Williams thriller One Hour Photo so news of a new project for Romanek has got me a bit excited.

The new film is titled Never Let Me Go and it will star Keira Knightley whose schedule has opened up since the scrapping of the King Lear project she was once attached to star in. Andrew Garfield (The Other Boleyn Girl) and Carey Mulligan (An Education) have also joined the cast.

Fox Searchlight will distribute the pic which was penned by one of Danny Boyle's favorite scripters Alex Garland (Sunshine and 28 Days Later).

The story revolves around a trio who grew up in a boarding school with no contact or knowledge of the outside world until they discover they are clones grown for the sole purpose of organ donation.

Let's hope this one doesn't fall apart also.

This is based on the critically acclaimed novel Never Let Me Go. Some would even call it a masterpiece. Plus from what I understand, this is more of a drama than a thriller. So this isn't like The Island. I'm interested in seeing how Carey Mulligan does. She's a decent actress from what I've seen. The Book is on my bookslef though.

What happened to Keira's other movie The Beautiful and The Damned? Wasn't that supposed to start in March? I really liked the Painted Veil and I was really looking forward to seeing what John Curran did with Fitzgerald.

"Never Let Me Go", the book, is a masterpiece indeed. It isn't anything like "The Island". It's a sci-fi story, but there's nothing futuristic or otherworldly about it (yeah, there's the clone thing, but they don't show anything). It revolves only around the main characters and the school they study.
It's waaaay depressing and deep. I always thought it was kinda unfilmable, but Mark Romanek is a great director (love his videos, "One Hour Photo" is great). Plus, the man has an eye for colours. I expect at least a fabulous-looking picture.

Not sure about Keira's casting, though. She's a great actress, but the main character in the book is your typical ordinary-looking girl. And everybody knows Keira's gorgeous and very elegant, too.
