Katie Holmes Signs for Guillermo del Toro Co-Written Thriller
And a del Toro protege is set to direct
The last time Guillermo del Toro introduced audiences to a new director it was Juan Antonio Bayona with The Orphanage, a film that made my 2007 top ten list. So, with news he is about to greet us with another one is intriguing to say the least.
The film is Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and it is based on a 1973 ABC telepic about a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend and discovers they are sharing the house with devilish creatures. Katie Holmes is aboard to star in the feature with a script penned by del Toro and Matthew Robbins. Robbins and del Toro also penned del Toro's 1997 thriller Mimic together.
The director is Troy Nixey, a comicbook artist, is making his feature directing debut. Del Toro sparked to Latchkey's Lament, a Nixey-directed short that captured the tone del Toro wanted for Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. The trailer for that film is embedded in this post.
As for the previously mentioned Antonio Bayona, he is directing Hater for Universal with del Toro producing based on the David Moody horror novel and adapted by Glen Mazzara.
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark will shoot this summer with Miramax Films likely to release the film in 2010.
