Kapur Gets His Hands on a $200 Million Project?
Shocking considering his resume
Shekhar Kapur, best known for his Elizabeth films and not for the awful Four Feathers, is set to tackle Larklight, a period fantasy he will direct for Warner Bros based on Philip Reeve's novel. Tapped to adapt is Eastern Promises scripter Steven Knight.
The film 2006 book, set in a Victorian-era alternate universe in which mankind has been exploring the solar system since the time of Isaac Newton, revolves around a brother and sister who team with a band of renegade space pirates to save the world from destruction at the hands of a madman.
This one isn't going to be a small pic either as Kapur tells told the Indo-Asian News Service , "It's a $200 million project, probably the most expensive film I've made and will ever make." Hard to believe they are handing him a film of that size considering his only real film success was the first Elizabeth. Four Feathers truly was awful and The Golden Age left a lot to be desired even though first viewing was slightly tolerable.
On top of that, Kapur is taking over for the late Anthony Minghella for his segment of the shorts ensemble New York, I Love You.
