I don't remember the line exactly, but you could tell that they wrote it for the purpose of being able to unKill Kirk. It doesn't take a good smart director to do it... it takes a nerd like me to do it. =) Anyway, Abrams is on the other hand, absolutely correct. Writing Shatner into that movie is probably a terrible idea, particularly if you haven't considered how he escaped death in the first place.
